Danny Boy, Crooked Ewe and Evil Czech are ok (it's hard being in the area between Indy, Chicago and SW Lower Michigan, which all have good breweries). Crooked Ewe for food hands down, great menu, good location right on the river. I visit that area for family regularly and always make a trip to Bare Hands in Granger. Thai IPA is fantastic if you can get it, but I've rarely been disappointed with a beer I've had from there. Cheers!
Gunslinger711 pretty much summed it up. I'd throw in South Bend Brew Werks as well if you're downtown. Cool people, decent beer. I'd personally avoid Evil Czech, as I don't think most of their beers are any good, but if you're in the mood to watch sports, that's the place to go. I haven't been to Danny Boy (it didn't exist when I worked in SB), but it looks like its walking distance from campus, so would be very convenient.
To balance out the negative comments above about Evil Czech, I think that brewery is the best in the area. If you want to wander a little bit east to Elkhart, Iechyd Da Brewing (say: Yockie da) is pretty good. https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/29297/?view=ratings&ba=PapaGoose03#review Or if you want to wander a short drive north into Michigan, Greenbush in Sawyer, or Transient Artisan Ales, and Haymarket, and Tapistry are in Bridgman.
South bend has a new craft beer spot called Hop Station. Not a brewery, but lots of good stuff on tap. For food and a decent taplist, check out The Lauber. Located right across the street from Corby’s and right next door to one of the better bottle shops in the area, Citywide Liquor.
Also agree on Iechyd Da and the Michigan brewery suggestions. Depending on how far OP wants to drive, Arclight in Watervalet is a must stop for me when I'm in the area.
As long as we're delving into the Berrian County, Michigan scene, RoundBarn , in Baroda, has great beer and food. (They have several locations. The one in the URL I gave is the restaurant and brewery.) Another good choice is SilverHarbor, in St. Joseph. If you have time for only one, I'd pick Round Barn. A lot of people rave about the afore-mentioned Greenbush, but they've never done anything for me. Their beers always seem to be lacking. Finally, if time allows, stop by Oink's Dutch Treat, in New Buffalo. AWESOME ice cream. The kind that you enjoy eating when it's 10 below outside!
I'd argue if they're in St Joe they should pick The Livery but YMMV. Livery > Round Barn > Silver Harbor
