Hey everyone... My dad's job is taking him to South Dakota for the next 8 months. I have never been out that way myself and have never really heard much about beer coming from there either. The top couple search results I always get are Miner Brewing, Sick 'n Twisted, and Firehouse...but I know that I can get way more relevant information from this forum than I can get randomly searching. So, is there anything coming out of South Dakota that is worth asking him to pick up for me? Also, I am from Wisconsin...so I am wondering what breweries might distribute there that dont distribute to me. For example, does Melvin distribute there? Does Belching Beaver make it there? Etc. Etc. Etc. Thanks in advance!
Sorry no one from SD has showed you any beer love yet on this post. SD beers are kinda tough to track down in "off sale" form, not a lot of canning & distro. Most breweries sell local on draft. I can't talk about the west, b/c I haven't gotten out that way myself. In the east there is Wooden Legs Brewing Company in Brookings, they are putting out some nice beers. If your father will be anywhere in the north eastern part of the state it might be worth making a run to Fargo ND, (not SD beer) for Drekker & across the river into Moorehead MN for Junkyard. Both making/canning very good beer. Good luck! Cheers!
They haven't gotten a lot of love, but I really liked the Fernson Curio https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/39695/293287/?ba=Victory_Sabre1973#review
I live in the Sioux Falls area, and the local breweries to try are Remedy, Woodgrain, Hydra, Fernson, and Gandy Dancer/Monk's. There are a couple more opening this year. In the Rapid City/Black Hills area are Miner, Firehouse, Crow Peak, Sick & Twisted, and others. Of these, Remedy is my favorite. Some of these breweries can/bottle, and several do crowlers. As far as comparing distribution, use this site; http://www.seekabrew.com/distro/compare.html
Thanks everyone for all of your input. It gives me a great place to get started...provided my dad is willing to do a little running around for me. bbtkd...thanks for that site, really helpful. Also, does Remedy distribute at all outside of the taproom? Thanks!
Remedy doesn't bottle or can other than at-brewery crowlers. They are sometimes on tap other places in Sioux Falls and possibly in the the Rapid City area. Fernson cans a lot and has bombers, and are sold in South Dakota and surrounding states. Hydra also bottles but pretty much in SD. Woodgrain has bombers at the brewery. Sick N Twisted cans, but as far as I know SD only. I think Crow Peak cans, SD only. Miner is tap only in SD as far as I know. Wooden Legs in Brookings are tap though just started canning. I'm not too familiar with others in SD, but most/all are probably tap and SD only. I expect most or all will do growlers, and if they don't then many liquor stores do. The larger/newer Hy-vee food stores in Sioux Falls have excellent liquor stores with growler fills from breweries around the state.
That is so exceptionally helpful, thanks! Hopefully my dad is willing to maybe to keep an eye out for some of these beers. Thanks again!
Were you ever able to snag any Dakota beer(s)? I'll be out that way next week & on the "hunt" myself! Cheers!
