Anybody know if there are plans for a new brewery near Highland/Waterford/Commerce? We have a ton of breweries in Michigan, but I have to drive 45 min to an hour to get to a decent one.

I assume by 45 min, your referring to Griffin Claw?

Witches Hat is about 30 min from Highland.

No idea what your definition of decent is, but CJ's is in Commerce Twp. I've never been there, so I can't comment on the quality.

Batch Brewing is a new microbrewery in Detroit, which doesn't really solve your proximity problem, but is a spot definitely worth checking out for any beer fan in SE Mich. Lots of solid brews, chill tasting room, good food.

Pick up the new Michigan Beer a Guide. There are a few listed in planning that are not too far from you.

The closest brewery that I can think of would be River's Edge in Milford. Maybe Farmington Brewery also. I think there is a new brewery being built in Holly, if that is in your stomping ground. How about 51 North in Lake Orion, is that too far?

I've been to River's Edge and they are good.

Northern Oak is the one opening in Holly. They have hired the brewer that used to be at Frankenmuth.

There are a bunch of breweries, but not enough great ones...

It seems like a lot of breweries have a simple line-up -- that's not necessarily a bad thing, but they taste like mediocre home brews or worse. What comes to mind for me as a primo example is Quay Street Brewing in Port Huron. As it turns out, they've closed down. A bit of a shame because their food was actually excellent, but the beer was piss poor.

Went off on a tangent as I tend to do. Sigh.

Block Brewing down M-59 in Howell might be worth a look. I haven't been there yet but hope to this Summer. I second the River's Edge in Milford and Witches Hat in South Lyon.

Eternity brewing is also in Howell, and the owner/Brewster used to be an assistant at Witche's Hat.

This is only entirely unhelpful, but the only brewery in Southeast Michigan is Kuhnhenn, in my unpopular opinion.

I remember when the Kuhnhenns were mediocre homebrewers. There are some new breweries that will get better with time.

I do disagree with your Unpopular opinion and I wonder if you have been to many of the breweries including Kuhnhenn in quite a while..You talked of "simple" line ups and that has been a Kuhnhenn staple for almost a year..Yeah, you can get dripa, which is great..But the rest of their tap list is no better than quite a few around.. (I do love fluffer and creme brule too)

To Answer the OP, All these breweries are all within (around) 30 mins to highland.... Witch's Hat, Rivers Edge, Eternity,Block, CJ's, Brewery Becker

One opening in the "near" future are Draught Horse in New Hudson, Northern Oak in Holly, Draft Table in Wixom, 3rd Monk in South Lyon (taking forever)...Im sure im forgetting some but this is off the top of my head.
