I will be in Fussen for 2 nights & have a recommendation for a place in Seiden, Maria Hilfer Sudhaus. I will also be in Mittenwald for 2 nights - Private Brewery looks interesting. Are these worth visiting or are there other, better places? This video is on YouTube: Can someone identify the place? On this trip I will also be in Munich, Salzburg and 3 days in Bamberg. Thanks to all that post here for all of the detail.
Interesting that they're at a Paulaner Garten, but they're drinking H-P out of the bottle. Nonetheless, the view is priceless.
Well I've never been to Mittenwald, but glancing at Google Maps, I'd guess that they went up a Bergbahn and found a beer garden waiting for them. Heidelberg had a set up like that on their biggest mountain, the Konigstuhl. The beer garden was fairly generic, but with a nice view. @steveh maybe it's bottles only? Just a guess.
They are drinking the Oktoberfestbier, maybe the seasonal are bottles only? Hell and dunkel on tap, seasonal and wheat beers in bottles? I may be reaching here, but, like you, I don't understand why it would be in bottles.
Could be, but in the video they say they're going to the Oktoberfest in Munich the next day, so I'd expect Oktoberfest vom Faß would be available (at least it was at some Biergartens in Munich when I was there). Why Weiß in bottles? Only place I couldn't get it vom Faß was... Schneider. Yeah, of all places. It's just odd to me that they'd be drinking H-P at a Paulaner Garten -- even if the 2 breweries are associated, but maybe they mix the associated brands more often these days? Dunno. But it very well could be that the Garten, being so far from Munich, only gets certain kegs for their bar and bottles for other beers. FYI: From the Youtube page for this video: "Beer! Great view of the mountains from Mittenwald, Germany. Near the Kranzberg chair lift." Might be a clue, but my searches still couldn't find anything. There's a hotel near the lift that has a cafe with Paulaner sponsorship, but the view doesn't look the same. Wonder why the vid-people don't identify the "best beer drinking" place. Selfish bastards.
Mittenwald is where I used to stay for my cross-country skiing trips to the Alps; there's a little mountain pass right on the SE side of town that takes you over to Leutasch, Austria, which is where the Austrian team trains. Awesome area. As to the beers: Mittenwald Privatbrauerei is quite good. The Weizens and Helles are my go-tos down there. Export is good as well, and you may be able to catch the Heller Bock. Either way, I doubt you'll be disappointed. I will say that I'd be on the lookout for Hofbrau Traunstein's Weizens while you're in the general area. They truly are something special. Munich, Salzburg, Bamberg...nothing to see there
I'll be there the last week of June. On the Paulaner lights, those indicate more than just decoration? Herr B - thx for the tip in Mittenwald and your previous posts on Franconia. I'm on a beer-centric trip, hoping not to burn out my wife... I tried using google maps, looking thru places close to the lift, referencing off the church and blue striped pole w/o luck.
Looks like this place: http://www.kaerntner-alm.de/de/essen.htm Check out the top right pic.... Lights on the terrace are the same... this place is almost in a direct line from the Church to the bottom of the Kranzberg lift.... it is just below and to the left of the parking lot of you do a google satellite map.... Mittenwald is great, btw... been there twice... the lift up to the Karwendel is A-1!! Prosit!!
Eh, just guessing at it based on my experience in HD, where the standard seemed to be Pils & Export on tap, Weizen in bottles (and usually all the same brand). (admittedly HD is not Bayern) This doesn't surprise me too much, I've seen it with Löwenbräu and Franziskaner for sure.
By Georg, I think you've got it! Especially with the great tagline: mit Panoramablick auf Mittenwald. Yes -- things like that will usually advertise the beer available on premise or the "house" beer.
Never had their beers. Looks like a pretty cool place, though. And Fuessen is beautiful. BTW, how is it that we both live in Columbia (correct?) and have these commonalities but haven't met? Or am I missing something?
Well, the place is called S p e i d e n , it's close to Füssen, and definitely worth a visit. In the area around Füssen (the Allgäu), there are some more breweries worth a visit. North of Füssen you find Kloster Irsee (former benedictine abbey) and the very small Rössle brewery in Ummenhofen. West of Füssen, more in the mountains, is Schäffler in Missen. That is the only place I visited personally, but I remember the excellent food they have.
Scott from Bayern trips recommended MHS in Speiden - thx for the comments and the other places. Herr B - plz check your messages
Found another little vid that may give some more clues to the hotel (and confirmation of Bierman's research), though the pics are a little bit lo-res: http://www.hotelz.tv/info/germany/mittenwald/eFCbkLQRkLsPt/berggasthof-karntner-alm.html
Looks like they just lifted the pics from the website and planted them in the vid... Cool find! Prosit!!
