Anybody willing to share any good recipes/ tips for S. Eng. brown? I want to take a stab at this style, but a not a whole lot to go on due to the lack of commercial examples here in the States. Jamil's recipe looks interesting, but he is calling for about 17% crystal malts in the grain bill! I know it's suppose to be sweet, but that seems a little high. Then again maybe that is what's needed?
Different take: http://byo.com/hops/item/335-brown-ale The English BeerAdvocates (haven't seen them for a while) have pointed out that North/Southit is sort of a fictitious distinction. It's all just brown ale. Brew what you think you'll like to drink.
I never got much help, but I just started drinking the beer from this thread. It's good with a strong roast character, and some sweetness (I like my beer on the sweet side I think), it's not quite great though. I think that's because it's a little under carbed. I think may also be more accurate to call it a porter, it is really pretty much black. Also I think there are a couple of brown ales in the recipe section if you haven't looked there.
