My brother and I were thinking about cruising to Conroe to check out Southern Star this weekend and I was just curious if anyone has checked it out before. I saw on their website that it isn't climate controlled but other than that it looks like it would be cool to check out. Can anyone shine some light on if this trip will be worth it?
I've never gone in the summer time, but yes - great food by Outlaw Kookers, good beers, just don't wear sweats. If you have any Southern Star glassware, bring it, otherwise buy a big glass from them; it'll pay for itself quickly.
It has a similar "lounge" set up as the Karbach brewery. Well worth the drive though. They also tend to have a limited tasting on tap.
Cool, thanks for the input. I'm really hoping that they have their Pro-Am 2011 when we go... that beer was amazing when I had it. Let me know if anyone else is planning on heading out there. It is always nice to share a beer with some local BA's.
I have been twice in the past year, my parents live in Conroe, and we've always had a good time. It reminded me of the Saint Arnold tours at their old location. I would suggest packing a few folding chairs as seating is limited. When we were there over Thanksgiving I was told they were out of the 2011 Pro-Am so I wouldn't be too hopeful of finding it on tap.
They usually have the 3 year-rounds and whichever seasonal is current. In this case Walloon. Last time I was there it was a much different crowd from the usual beer nerds. There were groups of bikers and roller derby girls!
Been, there plenty of times in the last couple years, i work not 2 miles from there and get off work Saturday just in time for the tours. Its a nice relaxed atmosphere, they always have the 3 year rounders and the seasonals on tap. sometimes breaking out other stuff, even other brewers if they come up short. For $5 you get your glass and 3 tokens, i usually have 2 beers (i got the BIG glass) and save the extra coin for later or for their events when the bigger beers get rolled out. Have 4 "extra" tokens in my car with my glass, just in case i need em. The glass actually never leaves my car so i can have it on hand when the need arises. Also after the initial purchase you dont have to buy another glass. but i did anyways, think i have 4 or 5 glasses from them now including the Oktoberfest and Anniversary glasses from the last year and their seasonals. Its a good time. either the mexican food truck is there or the Outlaw Kookers are there. Hope the OK guys are there, the food is so good, if not pricey.
If you go this time of year its going to be hot. Try and get there early so you can find a seat inside near the big fans. The Outlaw Kookers do a great job, but you can bring in outside food. Other than the year rounds they have on tap and the seasonal, ask them for a 'dirty blonde'. Its an excellent mixure on a hot day. Enjoy
A dirty blonde at Southern Star is a blend of the Pine Belt Pale Ale and the Bombshell Blonde. I was skeptical about it, but I went for it on a hot day. The mix was excellent. I completely endorse this, give it a try!
