I noticed that there has not been much of a discussion about its release and also noticed that the All Things Southern Star thread had been shut down. I picked up three of these on Friday and am drinking my second one. What is everyones thoughts on this? I have to be honest, it is not the same that I remember the Pro-Am cans tasting like. That one was a palate wrecker where this one seems to be much more toned down.

Eager to hear what everybody thinks.

I drain poured mine... Too malty, sweet, and hops were all over the place. I have never drain poured a DIPA before.

I'm in this boat as well, IPAs and DIPAs are my go to beers, so I think I am a decent judge on them and this was undrinkable for me. Has anyone else got any metallic flavors from the bottled version?

    Valkyrie, I served Pro-Am 12. I knew Pro-Am 12. Pro-Am 12 was a friend of mine. Valkyrie, you're no Pro-Am 12.

Will Valkyrie be like Pumpkinator or worse? When Pumpkinator was 1st released, folks where saying it was far away from DR 9. 2012's release was better but still no DR 9. Southern Star will have a chance to make it better on the next run but will they?

I don't recall people saying Pumpkinator was bad, or even a drain pour. Bad comparison.

True. It was not a drain pour but it did not meet what was to be expected.

It almost seems like they had this beer ready for bottling and run got lazy. Like its been sitting around aging.

Agree. It tasted old, iced tea flavor. How the hell do you come out with a new brew to the market and have it be old, especially a DIPA which needs to be released fresh? I'm starting to wonder about Southern Star. Shame as I so liked Pro-Am 2012, of course it wasn't their recipe. Maybe freshness and getting the recipe right isn't such a big deal to them. :slight_frown:

I don't know about you guys! This beer is great. I never tried Pro-Am 2012 so not sure if SS was trying to brew another one of those. This beer had a solid DIPA malty background, fresh citrus and a strong piney taste on he tongue throughout. I'm a big malty IIPA guy so this was right up my alley. I had one out of my Sierra Nevada Hops glass, another out of the Sierra Nevada/DFH IPA glass and finally another time out of the IPA glass with a Arturo Fuente "Best Seller" last night. Must say I love this beer and am glad I didn't pass up based on the early reviews.

Definitely low carbonation and not much head on first pour. Later pours were like Guinness to get the good head.

I was a huge Pro-Am 2012 fan and I am so looking forward to Valkyrie. I have a couple waiting on me for Father's day and I was getting a bit dissapointed with all the negative reviews. Your review at least gives me some hope it is at least a descent DIPA.

If you have the SN/DFH DIPA glass, use it. Always brings the best out of citrus IPA's

I thought it was ok, not worth the price, but ok. Pro-Am 2012 was one of the best DIPA's I've ever had. I bought about a 12 pack of it. Wish they would can it again so I could get more...:slight_frown:

From what I have heard they do plan to can Valkyrie at some point.

As long as it is a Pro-Am 12 Clone then I am in!
