This is a solid analysis of pumpkin beers. For me there's two ends of the spectrum. On one end, you have have pumpkin pie beer (Pumking is the best of this category). On the other, pumpkin beer, which actually tastes like pumpkins, not spices. Smuttynose is a great example of this. CBC's is amazing, no clue how they get the beer to taste so great at such a low abv. It's one of the few truly sessionable pumpkin ales alonside Uinta Punk'n (CBC's is much much better though).

Well, this thread inspired me to open my bottle of Pumking tonight. That was the last one I'll ever buy. More for the rest of you I guess. Glad I got to try it anyway.

It's a pretty solid pumpkin beer for sure.

Does anyone know whether or not their brewpub will still have Pumking on tap first week in November?

Pumking is certainly one of the best. Hoppin Frog Frog Hollow is pretty dang good too. But Uinta Oak Jacked Imperial Pumpkin is my personal favorite. I'd still very much like to try Good Gourd and Rumkin.

How so? Cut all the bs about wanting "real pumpkin flavor". Real pumpkin tastes terrible. I can't imagine anyone wanting a beer that actually tastes like raw pumpkin. So once you realize you don't want a real pumpkin tasting beer, you settle into the fact that you want a beer that reminds you of pumpkin flavored foods......and what is the most common flavored pumpkin food? Pumpkin pie.

Pumking tastes just like pumpkin pie, and that's what most people want. You also mention candy sweet. Pumking is not candy sweet. Pumking is brown sugar, cinnamon, caramel sweet with a whole host of other flavors that compliment the beer perfectly. I normally hate over sweet beers, but for me Pumking is not overly sweet, it's just right. You want overly sweet? Creme Brulee fits that bill perfectly.

I'm not that sure how a beer that uses real chocolate as an adjunct can taste artificial. It actually tastes like real chocolate.

This couldn't be further from the truth. My teeth actually hurt after drinking half of a bottle.

I am against such beers as Pumpkin, etc.; all this"flavoring" is just wrong. But I am going to have to go out and try a few after reading all these posts. I might be missing something. I think I'll look for Southern Tier, Dogfish Head and Avery (Rumpkin) to start...

Then you have a overly sensitive sweet palate. As I said, I normally can't stand overly sweet beers, but Pumking is not that sweet that it would "make your teeth hurt". In fact, the 2010 version was actually hoppy and bitter which cut down the sweetness even more.

I actually love pumpkin flavor. Who said anything about raw pumpkin? There are many beers around that taste as though they've had pumpkin added... because they have. Think of a great pumpkin soup, it doesn't taste like raw pumpkin does it? I'd recommend you try some more offerings.

I love sweet beers and love basically any beer that can be explained using words such as "brown sugar, cinnamon, caramel". All great stuff, none of which is at all present in pumking.

I've only tried this years version, and compared to Good Gourd and Schlafly it's a sweet mess of a sugar bomb.

Raw pumkin = pumkin flavor, it doesn't get much simpler than that.

Pumpkin isn't "terrible", it's just exceptionally bland. I don't think there is any pumpkin beer out there that uses no spices, but as I laid it out earlier, there certainly are those that go all-in on the spices (like Pumking or Shipyard), and those that showcase natural pumpkin flavor more (like CBC or Smutty). I personally enjoy both styles, but I can appreciate where some people have a strong preference for one over the other.

Artificial in the sense it is just dumped in and the result tastes nothing like beer. For me, if I want an adult beverage dominated by chocolate(which I never do), I'll opt for a Chocolate martini or something along that line.
