I'm a distributor in Georgia and I'm ordering all of Southern Tier's Q4 beers (Krampus, Old Man Winter, Choklat, and 2Xmas). I need some opinions of the Winter and 2Xmas... Haven't had them yet. Stoked for the Choklat and Krampus though
I like both - and each provide something relatively unique. That said, Winter doesn't move well, and I think that comes down to the fact that people don't really know what kind of beer it is
2XMas is fantastic, Old Man Winter sells really well here. <3 Choklat, it's like a Nestlé Bar melted in your glass.
If you have problems moving good beer, it says a lot about how the beer program is ran at a store. Just a telling sign from the ones I am exposed to. Beer bars it's worst.
2X Mas was a very nice beer, but I'm not sure it's worth the price... Over $50 per case in these parts...
Well, for my two cents I'd say you can't brew enough "Choklat" for me! My wife and I love it. About the only thing you could do better with it, is to toss in in Bourbon barrels. After that, omg....I'm speechless. Wasn't a big fan of 2X Mass or Krampus or even old man Winter. But by all means brew as much Choklat as you like.
From last year... Of those two I really liked the 2XMAS, and even went back for more after I finished the first six-pack. It's not a subtle spiced beer, but they really pulled it off well (kinda reminiscent of spiced Christmas cookies). Old Man Winter I just didn't get. For what they were trying to do with it, I found it to have a very shallow and dull malt character, and too much residual sweetness. It was a chore to finish the sixer, and I wound up blending the last few with something else just to make it interesting. My local store went through their 2XMAS and then ordered more. Their original shipment of Old Man Winter hung around until Mar/April, so I don't think there were many repeat customers for that one.
I really liked the 2XMAS last year, had a peppermint taste which was different and very good. I think it was the same price as their other 2X beers and well worth it.
I thought 2XMas was phenomenal, and Old Man Winter is great on a warm winter's night. Haven't had Krampus, but Choklat is another solid one. Love me some Southern Tier!
I'm not a huge fan of either style, but maybe my overt criticism will be of some help. I found the flavors in 2XMAS to be far better than Great Lakes' Christmas Ale. GL struck me as disgustingly sweet, like a fermented cherry candy cane. 2XMAS was spicy, sweet, and savory, like a gingerbread fruitcake.
2XMas and Choklat are fantastic, but I haven't had the others. Choklat is pretty much guaranteed to sell.
