I'm familiar with the origins of the term schizophrenia. I didn't meant to suggest ST deliberately named the beer with the disease as their primary motivation, but see that I did so by making the breast cancer analogy, so point taken there. The most likely association of the term today, by the general public or a layman, is to the disease itself and it's the lack of consideration given to that, I guess, that makes me think it's not the best name for a beer.

I also had it at the Firestone Walker invitational and also thought it was a very good brew, it was pretty damn tasty!

They can name the beer whatever they like. I just happen to think it's in poor taste. If you've ever had any experience with what schizophrenia does to people and their families, you might understand why I don't like it. But don't worry - I'm not losing any sleep over it. It actually takes a lot for me to be offended. I just think it's a dumb name.

    And welcome to Beer Advocate.

Geez, all this blathering, and oooh my butt hurts cos that name thing, and a spawling mess about the DT's and raging bitch's and no one gets that Southern Tier might just be Sonic Youth fans, and think "Schizophrenia" the lead off from their 1987 album, Sister is a massive tune.

    "I had a dream
    And it split the scene
    But I got a hunch
    It's coming back to me"

They were supposed to have it on tap last night at Coles in Buffalo. However, they burned through the remaining 6 kegs at the brewery (he only brewed 8 kegs) and it is now all gone - according to the brewer at the ST event. He said one keg was still on at the brewery's pub when he left but when I called a woman told me they had taken it off because the fruit was clogging up their lines - so it is possible they may still have a little left at the brewery. I told the brewer I may have to french press some fresh strawberries in with some Choklat and see how it turns out - Cheers!

As of about a month ago, there are no longer sub types for Schizophrenia. All of the types are accounted for on a spectrum now. But if I had to pick one I'd say catatonic.. if it spent a long time sitting lifelessly in a barrel, then I think this one would be apt.

PC outrage just won't die quietly. I hope this beer comes to Texas somehow. Sounds delectable.

Hey bob did you ask them if they are going to use more bourbon barrels? It is so odd to me that they don't have a barrel program. They have so many beers that seem perfect for a barrel pumking (rum barrel), Choklat (bourbon), back burner (bourbon), etc. I've had the barrel aged back burner before and it was awesome. Wish they would do more.

I'd like to know this as well. I loved the Cuvée Series and want more beer in barrels from them.

Not a great deal but I did tell him that if they bottled the Bourbon Backburner that it would be a special release people would be clamoring for all over the country. But they seem to think that the time spent in doing so - 9 months in the barrel, space etc is not worth it. Perhaps if enough people keep hammering the idea home, they will do so.

He did tell me they are planning a set of 3 Belgian style beers in 750ml bottles. And they got rid of the Oat, Mokah and Jahva because they wanted to cull some of their offerings and those beers did not sell as well as others. He did say they may return in the future as special releases. The Mokah was fantastic - no coffee presence left so it tasted just like the Choklat which was fine with me. The coffee in the Jahva was subtle at best. And not much was going on in the Oat to my palate or my friend's who joined me. We also both enjoyed the wonderful aromas of the Pumking and Creme Brulee but lamented the lack of richness in taste and mouth feel we have experienced with those beers in the past. The 2 pub exclusives were nothing to write home about IMHO. We did not try any of the other offerings. Cheers!
