I've drank my weight in Spaten Octoberfest draft this fall and is as good as ever, liquor stores around here still have stacks of it as well .

That's it -- East Coast must be the teacher's pet this year.

“Spaten is a declining brand even in Munich.”

Is there a reason why the German beer drinkers are decreasing their consumption of Spaten beers?

    Cheers!

I love Spaten, you must as well since you joined BA apparently just to bring this up.

I don't know if consumption is down - but their brand presence is way down. I was there last year and I didn't see a single Spaten ad, billboard, bus depot poster, etc. It was never a huge brand, but at least it was still visible.
Also, at least 2 major city biergartens that were Spaten establishments were still serving Franziskaner, but were serving Loewenbraeu original and urtyp instead of Spaten.

Even the Beer Drinker's Guide mentions that most Munich residents would easily name 5 breweries in town and struggle with the 6th (Spaten).

If that does happen what do you suppose would become of their Oktoberfest tents? Switch to Löwenbräu?

Of course, Löwenbräu and Spaten are brewed under the same roof now, so who knows?
Man, that's difficult to (no pun) swallow, especially since Spaten has been such a big name in Munich brewing for so long.

See above about the allegiance, but I think I've already seen it in some establishments -- isn't the Schottenhamel Tent a Löwenbräu tent now?* **

*Guess not, as I look at the link.

**I also see that @Bierman9 has posted a great pic from the Schott tent of this year with a great big, delicious looking Spaten Maß!

Give Whole Foods a try. I grab Spaten Oktoberfest every year and was shocked to see it not available at Total Wine etc this year. Happened to walk into Wholepaycheck on a whim and found a big untouched stack. It was a beautiful moment.

Yes you are correct  I lived in Germany for several years and went to the Oktoberfest in Munich four times. The Paulaner tent was the rowdiest, but the Spaten tent had the best beer!

I guess I got spoiled... Between CostCo and BevMo I have had non-stop Spaten goodness for the last several years. Then suddenly in early September it was like someone flipped a switch. NO ONE had it. I just did a BevMo search and there isn't a single outlet within 50 miles that has a 12 pack. The closest is West Hollywood (they have only a single 12 pack left) and I'm not sure even Spaten would get me to drive to Hollywood!

I'm one of those really loyal customers that a company would love to have around. I've emailed Spaten, CostCo, BevMo, Total Wine, and gone so far as to look up the Regional Manager for Spaten... though I'm holding off emailing him as a last resort.

Good question. I dunno. The easiest solution would be just to scale back to 5 brand tents. H-P formed in 1972. Anyone know if that's what they did back then?

Funny you should mention this. I did a search on Spaten Optimator and it showed up at Whole Foods. I drove over to my nearest Whole Foods and they had 3 6-packs of the Oktoberfest left. I asked one of the employees who worked the section to check in the back for me, and he came out and said "that's it, the last 3 6-packs we have and we won't get any more for another year!" Whether there was any truth to that statement or not, hard to say...

My local pub still has Spaten Oktoberfest on draft. The local rep said they got 20 kegs delivered this year.

He's the "H" in S&H. I hope they pick up a few more, I've been hoping for Rothaus for a while now, not sure it will come to fruition. I would also love to see them pick up Unertl and/or Guttmann. Who knows...

Yeah- the O'fest may have showed up late this year, but one benefit is that there is still plenty to be found. It was the only amber version I got, too.

I can't say I've noticed an issue with the other styles either.

No joy at Trader Joe's. I think I'm going to call this "The Year without an Oktoberfest" :slight_frown:

Someone at Spaten really dropped the ball...

What's the story with Andreas and Spaten West / Chrissa Imports? His dad was the founder, correct?
