John- jeez, I envy those who got to enjoy those special kegs of HopBack, that sounds like it would be awesome (though not as overall balanced as NN). As to the relationship between that beer and Nugget Nectar, it comes from Troegs' website:

" Starting with the same base ingredients of our flagship HopBack Amber Ale, Nugget Nectar intensifies the malt and hop flavors to create an explosive hop experience."

    :-) I stand corrected.

I'm surprised to hear this, as IMHO, the hopped up versions of hopback were NOTHING like NN. The special kegs of hopback (UJ's had a gravity feed firkin for one of their events several years ago) were arguably as hoppy as NN, but were much drier and with a completely different malt profile (not nearly as juicy and/or fruity).

Eh, don't you think brewing something with all the hops is way different than just dry hopping a cask? Just like adding hops at different time during the boil changes what those hops do quite a bit.

edit: Also dry hopping isn't going to raise the ABV 2+%.
edit2: Unless I'm misunderstanding what Double Dry Hop Hopback is and it's really a special version of it and not just something on cask. If it's that, I'd still argue that the base recipe would be the same, but the double dry hop part causes the divergence.

I anticipated the NN release last year with great expectations, only to be let down. But, I didn't give it another chance with a later batch and as far as some of the posts here indicate, I should have. I will anticipate the 2013 release with great expectations again, hoping it is as good as the 2011 and previous years' versions. Everybody should get a pass. As far as the guy who said he's finished with Troeg's, I say, Great! More for the rest of us.

Probably, but as I don't brew, I don't really know.

It just seemed to me that hopback really doesn't have much in common with NN, and dry hopping the hell out of it seemed like the most comparable beer I could think of to NN (assuming it's just a hopped up version of hopback). Sure, I woulldn't expect the two beers to be identical (or even all that similar), but these two beers had virtually nothing in common (except that they were both pretty hoppy).

It's not just a hopped up version. It's stronger too.

Yup. See my previous comment about the two beers having virtually nothing in common.

I gotta remember to put the phrase back onto my profile page, "If you have the least bit of suspicion that a post of mine is sarcasm, it definitely is" that has gone missing since the old site crashed. Maybe some kind of smilie was needed, thought the sarcasm was pretty obvious.

LOL!!! Sorry, I just read your post again, and I STILL didn't get the sarcasm (even if in retrospect, it seems kind of obvious). My bad... chalk it up to a long work week, and still getting over from jet lag after a trip out West. Cheers!

My humor is just dry enough for my tastes, usually way too dry for others', something I need to remember more often. Cheers!

if you look back to the earliest descriptions of nugget nectar we have always described it as the same base recipe as hopback with twice the specialty malts and three times the hops -- that's still pretty much true -- we just dropped the comparison a long time ago.

Now Frisco is going to have it next Wednesday. Sure it's not a special batch?

Yes, Frisco is having a Troeg's night but will there be Nugget Nectar? I doubt it (unless you found that specific info somewhere, please link to it).

Also, did the OP or anyone else go to Lure's on the 12th and have a pint? I'd be interested to see a review.

Not to bash Frisco's, but this would not be the first time they have announced a tap line-up for an event that included kegs they didn't have. Granted, it's been a few years since the infamous Stone event fiascos at the old place, but nevertheless, it would not suprise me at all if they didn't actually have a keg of NN for the Troegs event.
