I have a question for anyone who may have experience to draw on: I came upon a great many four-packs of Stone's Sublimely Self-Righteous Ale at a local shop, stored in their dark little walk-in fridge, with a best by date of August 2014, I think it was. I haven't ever tried drinking this one with a year on it, but the fact that it's a black ipa makes me suspect that it's probably still pretty good, just more stout-like and not quite as hoppy. Anyone have thoughts or experience with this? The price was marked down, too, so I'm tempted to go back for some.

And this thread can be kept around for questions others have about beers with questionable age on them, if people want.

It'll be good, but the sticky hop bitterness will be much reduced. Will taste more like a citrusy/tropical stout of sorts. If it's been in the fridge for the whole time it will be far better though. 3-30-300 hop rule: 3 days at 90°F = 30 days 72°F = 300 days at 38°F

At 8.70% ABV (Alcohol By Volume), this beer should have made the trip through time just fine "in their dark little walk-in fridge".

Ah, thanks for the feedback. Yeah, I believe it's been kept in that fridge away from light the whole time.

And interesting hop rule, superspak. Hadn't heard of that, but sounds like a good guideline.

Yea I have some experience with backing that theory up too. I aged my earliest vintage Founders devil dancers in the fridge for over 3 years and they were still really bitter after that amount of time(drank my last 2012 over Memorial day weekend). All of my other ones that were in cellar temps are already malt bombs, at a year younger. Same goes with my Double Crooked trees.

Experimental evidence from the field! It pays to know good scientists of cellaring like yourself, haha.
