I’ll assume details about the release will be posted later, or did I miss them?

Looks like Spiteful brewed a černý ležák and canned it!

Pulled out the second and third cans of the four variety 12 oz cans of Hostile Harry released in the winter, and these are incredible offerings. Vanilla is the only can remaining, thinking of letting this sit for a while as i prefer a lighter vanilla backing. I hope it turns out better than your pour.

The rich creamy texture, balance of many flavors and just the high level of quality in this series makes this a must pick up during stout season.

I love hitting Spiteful and Half Acre, my favorite double brewery stop in Chicago.

I know they are not one of the hazeboi DDH everything-under-the-son breweries in Chicago, but Spiteful is criminally underrated. On the last day of our 6 month stay in Chicago in fall of 2017, my wife and I went to their taproom opening and it was a great time; all the hard work, effort, and expert brewing you'd hope for. Nice lay-out, not over-sized, welcoming, etc...
They make some of the best true to style beers in the region. I can't wait for my August pit-stop(s?) there, and then getting some food and more beer right next door at HA Balmoral.
Surprised how slow this thread is... cheers from CO!

I usually enjoy their beers too but like others I kind of forgot they existed till I saw this thread. Not sure why that happened.

I like Spiteful, but at least from my perspective, it's because they're doing what a couple of the other guys around town are doing, and releasing the vast majority of their one-off beers at their taproom. That, coupled with the fact that they had a huge winner in BA Malevolence Chocolate Caliente and went quiet with it, is why they're not at the top of my mind most of the time.

I'd be happy to pick their stuff up at a beer store, but like Maplewood, the majority of the stuff I want to try isn't convenient for me to grab.

Credit where it's due. Back when all new breweries were pushing out 22oz bombers of their beer, Spiteful was investing in cans. They saw the future!

Also, Alley Time is a wonderful beer!

i noticed a change in direction when they sold the rights to their distribution to breakthru. They were advised to drop alley time and focus on IPA and Working for the Weekend. They also stopped making all of their bomber IPAs and stouts around that time. Their freshness declined when all of this happened. You don’t see hyper fresh spiteful anymore and that was many people’s favorite part about spiteful. They are in a weird spot. I still think of them as a really small brewery but they don’t self distribute like a brewery their size normally would. Maybe I’m wrong and they’ve grown too big for that or didn’t feel they could pull it off like Pipeworks or others that still do it themselves

I wish they’d go back to brewing their ipa with el Dorado like it was originally. It’s fine but it’s just one of many Citra Amarillo IPAs on the market these days.

Couldn't agree with this more. Didn't realize the changes happened when they signed with Breakthru. Always thought it was odd that they dropped Alley Time & changed the hop in their flagship IPA. At my local Binny's & Trader Joe's (the burbs) its definitely hard to ever see super fresh Spiteful.

GD Pigeon Porter in 4 x 16 is definitely underrated IMO. Love that they have a dark beer year round in cans.

I have really enjoyed some of their more recent stuff in cans from the taproom - dark lager, German pilsner, etc - but its hard to get it since I don't get up there much. Wish more of it saw distribution. Every time Im up at the taproom though, I really enjoy their beers.

It’s hard for me to go their when Half Acre Balmoral is right next door and more to my liking. I find their management to be condescending which also sends me elsewhere to spend my drinking dollars. But I admit it’s good to have their part in the diversity of styles available in the city

That hop change happened before their decision to sell their distro rights, probably late ‘16 or early ‘17. I bet the ipa recipe changed in 2015. El Dorado was hard to get at the time. I bet it’s way easier nowadays

I remember spiteful LOVING el Dorado hops back in the day. Biker appreciation (Citra & El dorado) is still one of the best imperial IPAs I’ve ever had. Especially the first batch, which seemed more El Dorado driven than following batches. Chatty Cathy used it too. Maybe Demanda too, I cant remember. All these beers were made during my home brewing days so I was paying close attention to breweries nice enough to list the hops being used.

I just found stubborn sally on tap a few weeks ago and liked it. It reminded me of some of those beers but drier than how I remember the others.

Aren't they just living up to their brand, though?
I mean, I go for the beer, but stay for the spiteful abuse.
Just like that one guy at Local Option years ago. (cough)

Just visited Spiteful last night; very solid as usual. The sally pale ale was awesome for its weight, but the GFY Stout... man that shit is good.
It was good to get back there, last night was on their opening day in 2017, so nice to see it become a bit of a neighborhood corner bar atmosphere. Pooches here and there, neighbors having beers, etc. Good folks, too, behind the counter. H/T to Brett who also suggested several other places to try. Cheers.
