I just ran into a shit ton of Abt 12 on the shelf. I don't see this available everywhere and very few trades for it. Its highly rated but is it actually worth something? Is it common to see it on the shelf? What's your thought on trade value?

That's what I thought. Very strange though, I don't see it a whole in Chicago.

Maybe you're right, I honestly just have not seen a whole lot of it. Hardly anything on beermenus.com.

Worth something? Like...a baseball card? :astonished:

It's beer...and that one is a great beer...so drink it.

Truth. People like this are the driving force behind the "craft beer economy," and the #1 reason why it's completely f*cked up.

Yes people like this guy are the root of all that is wrong with craft beer. Its the guy who doesn't realize Abt 12 can be bought off the shelves, not the guy going to brewery only releases with a dozen mules then selling them on eBAy for 10x profit, that is creating the "craft beer economy".

Give the guy a break, he just inquired about the trade value of a beer, likely in hopes that he could trade it for other quality beers he would drink. I dont see whats wrong with that.

Buy it and drink it. It is better than most of the stuff you might trade it for.

No, it's the people new to the scene who get caught up in the economy. They then become the mule-toting release goer who knows more about the trade value of the beer than the beer itself. And yes, those same people become sellers on eBay. People who pay enough attention to know what beers are "valuable," and just want to make a quick buck.

This guy is asking about value without knowing shit about beer. Why the hell would someone new to the scene worry about a beer's value instead of whether or not it's good? Oh yeah, because of the stupid "craft beer economy" generated in large part by a bunch of idiots who are likely on this site - the hoarder/ticker/"hype-creating"/KHU crowd. And if you don't know that Abt 12 is common, you should focus more on actually trying new beer rather than immediately jumping into the trade scene.

My words may be harsh, but that doesn't mean they're not true.

OP, from his post, strikes me (and I could be wrong on this) basically as the kind of person you describe in your indictment, the person who thinks of beer as an investment, who thinks how good the profit might be from that beer, not how good it might taste.

You got all that from his initial post. Don't you think thats a pretty big extrapolation?

Or maybe its a person new to the scene who sees a highly rated beer, thinks, "oh I could probably trade this to get other highly rated beers that otherwise wouldnt be available to me, that way I can try more highly rated beers". To me, thats more logical than this self center, mule toting, beer scalper that you seem to think is the norm. Maybe Im delusionaly optimistic but I'm glad I view the world that way because if I were as cynical as you about beer I cant imagine my daily outlook on things that actually matter in life.

It's that mentality of " beer worth" that will evolve into the brewery-release-hoarder-guy-for-profit-guy. You realize those guys start somewhere, right? Don't feed a mogwai after midnight....

jmartino, this one cracks me up. In your own words, "...you're an asshole to complete strangers."

Let the man ask a damn question. No need for the beer holy warriors to jump on his back & beat him to death with their +6 Sticks of Self-Righteousness.

Sorry. But pounding people for asking questions is getting really old. If you want to rant, feel free, but start your own thread without attacking people you know nothing about.

What problem? You mean people asking questions about "trade value"? Or your assumption of what he'll "turn into?" They're not my favorite posts, but is asking the question a problem?

    Answer: no.

You made a stupid assumption about the guy's motives & posted something rude. Why is that cool?

No assumptions. Questions of, "is it worth something," are nothing more than inquiries of profit. Someone says, "oh yea, super rare guy!". He immediately runs out and blows his cash so that he can profit...from beer.

Dude, first rule: put down the shovel.

Your entire post above is one big, stupid assumption. I can think of several reasons to ask that question that don't involve "profiting" from the beer.

Value is in the drink, guy. If I ever want to know if a beer, "is worth something," - actually - then I will buy it and drink it. And if good...then buy more.
