It's good that there are so many variations of pumpkin out there to please a variety of palates. I personally enjoy Pumking the most of the bunch, but that's just me. Weyerbacher was good too.

Cigar City Good Gourd is an excellent pumpkin beer. I'd also agree with Southampton Pumpkin Ale being a nice one.

I finally had the opportunity to try the Schlafly Pumpkin last weekend for the first time, ...yep, it was darn impressive and lives up to the hype.

Just picked up my first six pack of Schlafly Pumpkin Ale for this year. I also bought a bottle of the ST Pumking. I usually end up buying at least a case of the Schlafly before the the fall season is over. I just love it.

It is the same concept with every beer: when someone loves something they drink it no matter what anyone says. Case in point: I bought a bomber for ST Pumking and now he has bought 3 cases of it....hehehe :grinning:

I have, and always thought that DFH Punkin has the best flavor as far as pumpkin beers are concerned, definetley the most authentic pumpkin flavor.

[Williamsburg] Alewerks Pumpkin is damn good. Probably my favorite, and not just because I am in VA. Really looking forward to this year's Farmhouse Pumpkin from Hardywood Park.

Have to throw in a vote for Smuttynose--I actually drink more than one, rather than the 5 oz. pour of dessert that Pumking is.

I love Pumking. If I had money, I would buy it by the case. I don't find it overpowering, too sweet, or unbalanced. I would drink it all year long if I could.

For every time you chumps hate on Pumking, I will drink a bottle to myself in one sitting.

I agree with Fisherman's. It's a subtle pumpkin ale, that's heavier on the stout and lighter on the spice. Probably something the op would like.

I agree...For me Pumpking is way over powering with the spices. Really only 2 pumpkin beers I like,
DFH Punkin and Sam Adams Harvest Pumpkin

I've drank a shit-ton of beers if my day, but Pumpking was the very first beer that I ever reviewed and there's a reason for that. It truly is the greatest beer I've ever come upon and it has brewed my passion for not only more Pumpkin Ale (my favorite style of course), but also all craft beer in general. While this game of brews becomes utterly addictive, I found that once Pumpking disappears (and it does where I'm at) I always to tend to miss it - as if it's my true calling. I'll drink about just any beer, but I'm always thinking about Pumpking! It's like the Sookie to my Eric, or the Bella to my uh... wait, what the hell was I saying?

That being said, Southern Tier has never, not once, ever let me down. I've drank nearly all of their Imperials, and a few of their sixers and I've never been less than totally impressed every time. I've got a new bottle of the Pumpking in my fridge, and while I can't buy a case, I will buy more bottles this year than last year. I'm looking forward to mixing a few, drinking a few, and if possible, draining my blood entirely and replacing it with this sweet nectar.

I couldn't agree more. Just look at my SN. I was never a big beer drinker until I got completely obsessed with ST Pumking last year. It really made me interested in beer and got me to try a lot of different beers over the course of the past year or so. I also agree that ST has never let me down. I think they do it right.

I picked up 3 bottles of Pumking the other day and plan to pick up more. I don't have a ton of money to spend, but I dedicate most of my "alcohol allotment" in the Fall to pumpkin ales because they are hands down my favorite. I know they aren't for everyone, but they make me happy. My girlfriend even gets excited now and I got her into liking Schlafly Pumpkin.

    I shed a tear for that drain-poured Pumking. . . .

It is rather in your face with pumpkin pie flavor, though. I understand why some BA's don't care for it. If I didn't love pumpkin pie so much, I guess I could understand calling it "unbalanced." I love it, though. Definitely my favorite Thanksgiving brew. I will be doing a four-year vertical this Thanksgiving.

I just drank a Pumking I had in the fridge for a year and I honestly think that made it "perfect". I love the beer anyway, but agree that by the end of one it leaves an extremely "sweet" taste in my mouth due to the dominance of the nutmeg. Twelve months later though a lot of the spice has settled and it had great balance. I still think it's the best pumpkin beer I've had so far even with the fresh spices but would highly advise trying it out with some months on it. Looking forward to trying some pumpkins I haven't had access to before in PA. Elysian started breaking into Pittsburgh this past year and I'm really hoping their three pumpkin offerings follow suit.
