Headed to St. Louis on business for a fee days and was hoping to hit up one or two of their good breweries while I am there. However I am mostly unfamiliar with them. I've had a few Schlafly beers over the years but can't recall which ones. A buddy sent me a 4 Hands Berliner Weiss which I liked but haven't had any of their other stuff.

So, BA...which would you recommend I visit and why?

Thanks in advance for the help!

I think there is a fairly large brewery down there that is pretty popular to visit

Schlafly taproom has their ba vanilla imperial stout on and I think the oud bruin is too.
4 hands has a new table beer called 2nd hand, also divided sky rye and centennial red
    Civil life - brown ale
Not sure what's on tap at perennial right now

If you want to try a bunch of locals I'd recommend just going to baileys range they sell beer from every local brewery and have a big selection

If you see 2nd shift Katy, art of neurosis, or brew cocky I'd recommend those above most

I was just in STL for about 5 weeks. I hit a few breweries, and The Civil Life was my favorite. Great beer and people and just a great vibe.

It's a pretty average place for craft beer drinking, OP, so definitely temper your expectations going in.

Schlaflys does some good things with its assortment of pale ales. Perennial has some neat beers though their styles are the beer drinkers' gourmet food option. Sip a little and enjoy.

Not much else to write home about.

Definitely go to 4 hands (along with Schlafly and Perennial)

This is contrary to everything I've heard lately.

Sounds like suggestions are all over the board but 4 Hands gets lots of love.

Urban Chestnut is my favorite local brewery, but I prefer more traditional styled beers and I've been on a German kick lately.

It just depends on what you want. If you want traditional, it would be Urban Chestnut, Schlafly and Civil Life. If you want places that push the envelope, then Perennial and 4 Hands (in that order).

An earlier posting suggested Perennial for Belgian, but I think you'll find more Belgian style beers on tap at the Tap Room than you would at Perennial, especially since their Mussel and Belgian Beer Fest was this past weekend.

this is the exact order i would recommend as well, 4 hands is my favorite downtown st louis brewery with civil life not far behind, perennial and schlafly are pretty close also, and UCBC and six row bringing up the rear

Given that you were bitching about Three Floyds prices the other days, you should probably look past Perennial, because their bottles are priced similarly. That said, if by chance you can somehow find the right ones (Savant Beersel, BA Sump), the price is actually justifiable.

In any case, 4 Hands is the best overall brewery.

Others worth checking out (some of which would need to be in bottles, since the breweries are 1+ hours out of town): Cathedral Square, 2nd Shift, Civil Life, Schlafly, Bat Creek.

Speaking only for myself, I regard the rest as skippable. The rest could generously be called mediocre, except perhaps Six Row and Alpha, both of which are outright terrible.

Thanks for all the suggestions/opinions. Again...sounds like 4 Hands is the overwhelming #1 choice in STL
