A coworker of mine is driving to St. Louis for holiday (from NC). She offered to pick up some beer for me if I wanted, since she is driving. With that said I had two questions and would love it if anyone could answer them. 1) How available is Prairie, Jester King, Saint Somewhere, and Firestone Walker? She probably won't be going to any specialty bottle shops so I don't want to ask her if she can get these for me if they going to be be hard to find. 2) Is there any local beer I should ask her to pick up? Thanks!
Not sure about Prairie, Jester King or Saint Somewhere around st. louis, but most of the Schnucks and Dierbergs grocery stores here will have Firestone Walker. Union Jack, Double jack, and Wookey Jack will be in most of these stores. A few of the Schnucks stores are also supposed to carry the 17th anniversary. You can get others, but you will have to go to a stand alone liqour store for them. For local beer, I really like Perennial. The most common are Aria, a Belgian pale ale, Saison De Lis, a saison with Chamomile, and Hommel Bier, a dry hopped Belgian pale; these will be a number of grocery stores. I recommend their stouts, Abraxas, Sump Coffee, 17, but am not sure how common they are outside of specialty shops, since I usually just buy at the brewery. They are releasing these stouts this week, so they might be in stores for a little while.
With the exception of Firestone, the beers you asked about are through Shelton Bros and only available at specialty shops
I just spoke with her and she said she might be going to a place called Dirt Cheap. Is that like a Total Wine? Would it have any of the Shelton Brothers items?
Dirt Cheap would be unlikely to carry Shelton Brothers. It's a discount tobacco and liquor store. The last time I was in there, they did have some craft beer, but it's been a while.
The Wine and Cheese Place in Clayton and Lukas Liquors both had shelton brothers stuff last time I was there. Nothing crazy, but some of the normal prairie stuff for sure.
She needs to try Randall's Liquors or Luka's Liquors. Those may be your best bet. Stay on the MO side of the Mississippi river though.
