Where you score the SN Pale Bock?

I reviewed it last year, but haven't seen the 2022 release (if I ever will).

I like it enough, even though it carries the SN pedigree of highlighting hops just a little more than I like in a Bock (Heller or otherwise).

FWIW -- I have one can left over from last year (see the pic in my first post) that I hope to add to this thread before April 3 -- closer to Fruhlingsfest, of course.

Enjoying a Weihenstephaner Korbinian tonight. A classic doppelbock that I have had many times before. This isn't my favorite non-Weizen doppelbock (that would be toss up between Andechs Doppelbock Dunkel and Weltenburger Asam Bock) but it' s not too shabby.

    0.5 L bottle
    Glass: 0.5 L Mug
    Serving Temp: approx 48 - 50 degrees F
Bottle Code: 1089 (guessing that would be in Feb, 2019?)

Look: Dark brown with mahogany highlights when held to a light. Opaque, even when held to a light. Huge initial beige-to-khaki head that took up almost 1/4 of the mug and was higher than the top of the mug. After sipping, the head broke up and became a thin khaki film on top of the beer. Excellent lacing.

Smell: Rich semi-sweet chocolate over top of figs and dark bread

Taste: Sweeter than the nose. Milk chocolate and molasses with figs and hints of raisins. Pumpernickel bread. Things dry out towards the end and finish on a dry chocolate/cocoa note.

Feel: Creamy and mouth-coating. Medium body.

Overall: An enjoyable and drinkable doppelbock. Definitely "liquid bread". This has a nice dry and chocolatey note that I like in doppelbocks. It is sweet, but not overly sweet nor cloying.

FWIW -- Korbinian is one of the few 5s on my review list. I may have to find a bottle for this thread before Starkbierzeit is over.

Thinking on Korbinian, has anyone ever visited Weihenstephan during Starkbierzeit? I've never researched whether they participate -- or even have their own celebration.

Sooooo, This is what I picked-up yesterday, with several other Bock family beers. Too bad the selection is stingy. Everyone said they “hope” to see more in a few weeks.

And my review from, TEN YEARS AGO (yikes!), is in need of an update. Maybe that bottle had been mistreated.

Tonight, I will say the old scores are a bit low. The smokiness is as comfortable as a hug on a cold wet day. Even if we had some seasonably pleasant weather today. The relaxation factor is still perfect. Aside from the head, the description holds up.

An excellent choice if I don’t say so myself!

This beer is a looker and if held up to light it’s even more beautiful, awesome ruby like hue to it. Nose is toasted bread crust, toffee richness and some dark fruit notes hiding underneath. Taste is similar with a delightful aftertaste of that crusty bread. Has a mouth coating richness to it that quickly disappears and goes down like water. Just the subtlest warming builds if you take a few sips back to back.

No more bocks in the fridge but it’s almost empty so hopefully I’m back before this is over.

I already have a few Willi’s and it’s not my favorite beer glass style (just a personal preference thing, nothing wrong with the style), but I think the same thing every time I see one in pictures.

The Becher became a favorite a few years ago when I was gifted a couple Spaten examples by a bar-tender. I just like their look and heft.

I have a few too, but I use 2 plain unmarked Bechers, I got at a restaurant supply store, as my everyday go-to for lagers (see my pics in this thread).

The Schlenkerla would be cool to have for their Rauchbier, but I don't really *need* one.

I 'm drinking a 32oz crowler of Utepils Minnator, I bought about 10 days ago at the crowler guys, It's not on tap now. It's good, I'm getting a hint of stone washed fruit too but it does taste as if it's starting to go down hill a little.

Plus I had a few other oddballs the last week or two, Like GinReaper. Gin infused Doppel. it was ok but not for me, I think rum or whiskey would have been a better combo. Or whiskey barrel aged Leinies dark lager, this was drinkable but I think the whiskey over powered the base beer

Revisiting another old friend. Interesting how we drift apart then realize something has been missing.

The appearance is very different, nice tall fluffy head and after the chill haze passes, gem clear. Dark (never “darn”) rusty copper. Aroma is about the same, more sweet, less fruit than 2012. And the flavor, much richer, much more bread. Heck there was no mention of bread in 2012. Modest warmth allows this to ring clean and long. Feel is essentially no different. It is just nice to have a beer like this before dinner. And f the abc were lower, one could easily enjoy a few while conversing casually. Appearance definitely score higher today, and while more rounded and developed, Flavor would score lower.

Perhaps I was too generous in the past. After all, I am an aspiring curmudgeon. “Cantankerous” now THAT is a word I’d like to find use for. Alas, another day perhaps.

Here's where you can get one:
    https://pffcoffee.com/product-category/glassware/

$6 for the big sized Willi Becher and $8 for shipping. They have 5 glass styles for Schlenkerla plus glasses for other German breweries.

Rant time: Needing to go to the website of Pristinum Ferum Fermentum (the coffee related branch off of OEC, which is related to B. United) to find the online store for B. United's beer glassware is an illustration of the perplexing messiness of mankind. How would a potential customer have any idea where to go for this? I'm their best case scenario - a nerd who tries to keep track of this stuff, gets emails from them, and actually buys glasses from them... and it's still a frickin' maze of rediscovery each time for me. The only way to get there that I know of from B. United's site, is to navigate to their special New York State Home Delivery online store, then from there navigate to their separate online coffee store... which are two things that nobody in Illinois would do if they were looking to buy a damn beer glass.

:astonished: Ah but good thing that "...Tipping is totally voluntary..."

Imagine, tipping* the guy who packs your glassware before you've received it.

"Ah, that pretty nice looking and an expensive glass (what with the shipping cost more than the glass itself) you've purchased there Mr. Kidden, we wouldn't want anything bad to happen to it, would we?":grimacing:

    * Yes, I went there. Brought up tipping. The third rail of beer forums.

Well, if don't count kids and dogs, Covid vaccines, the term "adjunct" and a dozen or so other topics.

Look, man, I can forgive a lot but putting that song into my head!
(I first heard in "live" as it were, in that damn Pepsi pavilion 1964/65 NYC Worlds Fair. A boat ride, IIRC.)

I might bitch about OT posts but, yeah, it all comes back to beer somehow...
