    "Solid "grocery store" beers.."

I can't disagree with that. Cheers!

if South Street Brewery in C'ville can win awards then Starr Hill can too.
anyone can make some good beers every now and then. doesn't mean they are good overall...

Cryptical Imp Stout and Double Platinum are good fresh and the BA Cryptical is good too, though very overpriced.

This was one of my favorite breweries when they first came out, then there was some AB deal in 2008 and I feel as there beers started nosediving. More production = less quality, at least for this brewery in my opinion in particular. Used to love "The Love" and "Dark Star Stout", now just not that excited by them. Maybe I have to try them again.

    Cheers, Matt

As a craft beer lover in SEPA who has had a varity of Starr Hill beers on tap in Cville, I'm not excited. Now if someone could get Blue Mountain here.....

Funny enough, you can't buy beer in grocery stores here in Philly. So, uh, not so useful.

??? Wegman's? Whole foods? I was under the impression that you could buy beer in those stores in SEPA. Not so?

That's very interesting. Despite my comment about GABF awards, I was excited to try both the Love and Dark Star, given their success at the GABF. I tried both within the past year or two, and was underwhelmed by both offering. Made me wonder if there was something I was missing.

Both beers have over a 100 reviews on BA, with average scores of 83 and 81. My feeling is that that's probably a fairly accurate depiction of their quality.... not bad, but again, nothing really to get too excited about either.

Okay, fine, fair enough. But not all of them. They need to have built a special bar area with a separate cash register. My wholefoods here in Philly doesn't do it nor do any more normal super markets. But fine, you win again.

As you know, that's really the only thing that matters to me (winning). :-)

When Starr Hill navigates away from twist tops, I will support them more (I reuse bottles for homebrewing). Until then, Heavy Seas and their delicious loose cannon will continue to get my $$.

I would go with Alewerks or Port City as best in VA. Agree that SH is average.

Starr Hill offerings are certainly no drain pours. They've got some solid offerings, and I've been pleased to see them branching out and trying things that are outside the standard--this has been going on for a while now. Full disclosure--I used to work for the company, but I personally always felt that they should have moved to the north more than venturing into some of the southern states... that's just me.

However, for the sake of playing devil's advocate, I noticed a few comments about the number of awards over x number of years, and it's worth mentioning that Devil's Backbone managed to take home 8 GABF medals in only 2 years (forgive me if I make an error in my numbers, but I'm pretty sure that's correct). Granted, they also make a pretty heavy number of submissions.

I agree with cmmcdonn, though... the twist tops should go. They make a pretty nice, solid keychain beer opener (which has been serving me very well for a few years now)... may as well make it useful for their own beers!
