Hey guys, looking for a gift for my bro. Any recommendations on starter kits for making wheats and brown ales?

Try carabou slobber as I understand it is popular although I've never done a kit before.

Are you looking for recipe kits or brewing equipment? Your phrasing makes me think it is the latter. If it's a recipe kit, it would be good to know the batch size target, typically 1 or 5 gallons.

All grain or extract? 5 gallons?

Wheat and Brown are 2 easy styles that can produce outstanding beers from extract with little fuss. Just get 3 packages of 3# DME wheat and 1 package of 5% to 9%AA hops.

Or the same for brown, but 6# light or extra light DME and 1 or 2 pounds of amber malt. Use an English hop variety, maybe East Kent or Fuggles.
Both can ferment with dry yeast. Use a wheat yeast for the wheat and S-04 or US-05 for the brown. Or even the -05 for the wheat.

    Voila.
That is a really basic summary, but it does have a little bit more personality that just ordering a kit. And these simple DME brews really can be satisfying. A lot of us knock them out just to have good beer around.
    Cheers.

Okay thanks guys. It's a recipe kit, basically everything he needs to start right away. Just a 1 gal batch since he has a small apartment.

I think you're not understanding the distinction.

Recipe Kit: Ingredients needed for one batch of beer. Use once.
Equipment Kit: A collection of equipment needed to brew any batch of beer. Use many times, with as many recipe kits as desired.

Does your brother have a favorite wheat beer or brown ale that is well known? You may be able to find a clone recipe for that beer(s) and purchase your own 'kit' at a local store along with the equipment. Google search the beer's name with 'clone' to see what you get. If you have a homebrew store that is local (here are ones in Virginia that are listed in the BA database: https://www.beeradvocate.com/place/...&city=&s_id=VA&c_id=&submit=Search&homebrew=Y ) support a local business and get just what you need.
