So I started my first starter today and just realized I used 1g to 100ml of dme not 1 to 10. Obviously that not enough to really get enough cells but tomorrow morning would I be able to essentially do a step up and make more wort or am I screwed
Standard water bottle (500 ml) to 1/2 cup DME...don't over-think it Now, just get back in the kitchen and make another one and add it to what you already have...quickly.
Unless you actually see some active fermentation going on, I'd throw it in the fridge for a day and decant the liquid off the top of the flocc'd yeast. Then proceed as normal with a fresh DME mixture.
There was some activity not a lot which I'm not surprised by consider there was only like a tablespoon of dme in to begin with so this morning I added a half liter with about 2/3 of a cup dme
You can make life easier if you buy one of these (Amazon <$10): and use this software: http://yeastcalculator.com/ If you really want to understand starters, read these two articles: http://mrmalty.com/article.php I won't do a step-up now as there has been very little growth, just pitch some new starter wort on top and call it a mulligan. For accuracy, weigh your dme and it's less confusing if you don't mix imperial/metric units.
I had looked at Mr malty and was following that but set my phone down to measure everything out and in the process of turning around dropped 0 somewhere
That's why it's always good to have some kind of reference point...such as a standard 500ml/1 pint personal water bottle and a 1/2 cup of DME...low tech is good tech sometimes
Well it appears that adding the extra starter wort seems to have worked so I guess I'm not completely screwed. Although when I went to swirl it up again this evening I realized I discovered I need a larger flask than the one I have
Ha! After that problem a number of times, I just switched to a 1 gallon carboy with an airlock. Glad it's humming along!
