Four words: Deschutes Black Butte Porter.

A world-class porter that isn't too nuts and any novice will like. Oh and it's easy to find in AZ pretty much anywhere that craft beer is sold (we have it in supermarkets here).

There is no starter stout. Your buddy may only like strong stouts like me and if you feed him weak stouts he may never realize how much he likes stouts. One of the few under 10% stouts I even like is BORIS from hoppin Frog.

    Some of my favs are:

    BT
    BCBS
    Parabola

You should feed him at least one over the top strong stout. Parabola is very easy to find or trade for.

Appreciate it, lol. And its gonna be a doozey hopefully. Looks like we'll end up around 53 SRM and 10.5% ABV. Its gonna be light on the bourbon and oak (we aren't gonna spike it or use oak chips, just soak some oak cubes in bourbon) and heavy on the chocolate. There'll be around 8oz of cocao nibs in the boil, another 4oz in primary and 4oz in secondary.

I want him to get a couple easier ones down then I'll start pushing the stronger ones on him cause thats what we're going for.

Who knows you could give him a weak stout and he hates it thinking thats what stouts are going to taste like. That's what I thought at first. You should collect a series, a weak watery one, maybe a sweet one, and an over top strong stout and do a tasting of all three. See where the taste buds land.

He loves good beer so if he hates one, he isn't the kind of guy to say "fuck it" and give up. Plus he's a homebrewer so he's in it for the experience and the flavor profile building. I have recommended some Imperials and Chocolate stouts to him as well, he just wanted some reco's for "starters" so thats why I had to hit you guys.

For sure. I trade back and forth with a buddy from Texas and that was my first bottle of the Abyss. I got to drink it on vacation in the Smokies.

I wouldn't look for a thinner or less abv just because he doesn't know much about stouts. I would hit him with a strong world class stout right off the bat and get him hooked.
    Founders Russian Imperial Stout
    Founders Breakfast stout
    Stone Russian Imperial stout
    Bourbon County stout
    parabola
    abyss

in that order..one after another.. no breaks, no food, no water..good luck

Sounds like a hell of a time. I have my first bottle in the closet at the moment. Can't wait to drink it. School doesn't give me too many opportunities to drink, but I'll find one for that beer!

You're in for a treat. Who knows, you might be snuggling your own bottle in your next avatar pic.
