I had found that same instruction and then also found the actual instructions. got everything set correctly. the unit is wired into a 2 pronged outlet unit and "contained." I figured 1 was for heating and 1 for cooling but that does not seem to the case. This is where it kind of sucks to be mechanically and electrically challenged  I can do a lot of things but wiring and such is not one of them. trying to get back in touch with the guy I bought it from for an advice but didn't know him so not holding out any hope really. maybe somebody in my homebrew club as some experience with these and electrical advice for testing, etc.

Sounds like you outlet is not wired 'independently" would be my best guess. Each of the receptacles must be wired independently of each other. As billf noted, there is a brass "bridge" that electrically connects the two receptacles. This must be removed and each receptacle wired separately.

I would check how the outlet is wired...

    Cheers!

The start up current draw on refrigeration units is always much higher than the running current. On my 9cuft chest freezer it requires 14a to start and only 2a to run. If your freezers require more startup than that and your on a typical 15a branch circuit, your likely to trip the breaker when the freezer kicks on.

update hooking up a light with a 40 watt light bulb and ensuring was right to the best of my limited ability, seems to be holding temp between 18 and 20 C which is in my target range for this batch.
Also filled a growler with water for the temp prove to sit in which worked better than the big plastic cup I was using before. cross my fingers but think i got this working now

update #2, thought I had it but had to go out of town for a night and came home today and liquid was done to like 4 degrees. seems as if i've got the heating and cooling switched somehow :slight_frown:
Need to find someone local with experience with these adn see if it's wired right and maybe they know about the operation of it. HBC meeting next week so hopefully one of the guys at the meeting as some idea what is going on. I guessing but I'm figuring 1 outlet is for heating and 1 for cooling but I'm such an inexperienced electrical guy I've got no idea what I'm doing with this ! UGGGGGHHHHH !

I continue to think, without actually seeing a picture of the inside, that the 2 plugs are not independently wired. Easiest thing to do it to take the top off your case, assuming it is in some kind of case, and take a look at the wall plug socket you are plugging into. (I just found these 3 picts online with a quick search, so all credit to the pict owners). You should be able to do this without removing any wiring, etc.

you are looking to break the brass tab between the 2 plugs so you can control plug each on it's own, one for heating, one for cooling.

    unbroken tab between plugs:

use pliers to break the tab:

so it ends up looking like this:

matched it to the picture I'm going to let it run tonight and see where it is in the AM.
Thanks to all for the patience and assistance with an electrical neophyte !

Temperature Controller STC-1000: Do not order from mixtea on ebay. I ordered and paid for mine four months ago, many messages back and forth and now nothing, no product and no refund and no more messages. I got ripped off, be warned.
