    Hey Everyone,

I found this Dopplebock recipe which looks very promising (and only takes 8 weeks to complete!) but there is a required item I don't know: 1 Sterile Starter Mix. Does anyone know what that may be? Also, if anyone has a unique recipe they recommend another brew to try I'm all ears. Thank you for your time!

I've never seen anything labeled like that at the LHBS or online. Probably just means you need a sterile starter for the yeast.

The recipe may say it's done in eight weeks but it might still have some harsh alcohol character after just eight weeks. Bottling a doppelbock that early deprives you of the opportunity to get small amounts of oxygenation that help develop some of the fruit flavors out of the munich if you age it bulk and bottle down the road.

My guess is it is just DME for a starter... Google it if you don't know what that means.

As for a Dopplebock done in 8 weeks? Insanity. Primary fermentation will likely last 2 weeks, including a D-rest, then lagering higher gravity beers takes a while, like 3 months... A regular gravity beer should be lagered a month.
