I just meant because Berlin is in East Germany. Like, a joke.

Concerning sours in Germany, first, I'm not a fan, 2nd, though a very weak version of a Berliner Weiße can be found in many larger supermarkets such as Rewe, unless you go to Leipzig, Goze is impossible to find.

Also, I think another reason for shooting down the stickies idea was that it would make the "Places" section moot and useless.

    Thanks for the recommendation!

That site sums it ALL up for German's attitude on Belgiums. 1 actual store, which is in Berlin. One Bottle shop in the suburbs of Stuttgart, which isn't a very promising place without a website listed, and 3 an online only shop (bierkompass.de) that SPECIALIZES in Belgian and craft beers from Europe & USA.

How many did you see listed for Italy? Switzerland?

I need to bring up this Stickies topic in the German forum. Thanks for the idea!

While my European geography may not be that strong, I DO know that Belgium is the country whilst Belgians are the folks that live there...just saying... Canada is the country above not Canadian... Mexico is the country below not Mexican... Now you're set for a trip to the new country!!

.re barbecue , you could probably find a decent spot in Nebraska, but you'd greatly improve your odds in the Southeast region... I'm sure I could find decent pies on the isle of man, but would have better odds in the north I'd reckon....

Sounds like the consensus is that a Visiting London thread would be useful. Maybe it'd be best to discuss which places to include via a big group conversation of people that live in or frequent London. I imagine a public thread would get derailed or be littered with posts by people who haven't been to London in years recommending Belgo, Porterhouse, Spoons, etc.

I wish you luck with this. Great idea. However I think The Bros are reluctant to do this because nobody will update over time. But there are other reasons I imagine.
I have seen these queries over and over...and over in this regional forum. I have always thought that you folks have much more patience with visitors' laziness than I, as you actually respond to each and every one without chastising. My initial reaction is to reply with "DO A *#@^%*ING SEARCH FOR CHRISSAKE".
From an American standpoint I think it comes down to instant recognition and gratification. "Surely someone else's request has nothing to do with the trip that I am about to undertake. I need direct personal recommendations that are newer than the 2-week old thread already out there." But I rant.

    I think this idea
is a great one. The initial post could contain a great deal of information that gets added to (carefully) by others and updated as need be. Then either a bump or a direct link when the inevitable searchless query comes in would be all that is needed. Specific topics could be addressed individually (what's within walking distance of ___ hotel/station, etc).

    A couple of cautions though.
    1) An overarching treatise such as this would need a post in the very beginning that voices a well-thought-out position on why it is in the visitors' best interest to drink the beer in the pub as opposed to trying to 'score trade bait' at the bottle shops to bring home. I nominate marquis for this.
    2) Again speaking from an American standpoint: the visitor is probably looking for a short easily-digested list
    this pub
    this pub
    that pub
    this brewery, Saturday tours only
    this bottle shop
I hate to say this in a negative way but you boys can be...chatty. Personally I love it, but the average American adventurer is not going to want to nimbly dance through a long string of posts where you debate whether one pub is better than it used to be and such. Keep it clean and simple. Visitors are probably looking for either a classic pub experience or whatever is on the cutting-est edge of the beer scene. Perhaps a list for both. But I'd suggest trying to keep the actual discussion of what merits inclusion to a minimum in that actual thread.

That's my 2 pence. Glad to have a topic that I can weigh in on as an outsider. I was told this was not my forum and I shouldn't frequent it as a contributor.

    Up the Spurs.

There are boundaries and barriers enough in this world, who would want to discourage anyone from contributing to this or any other of the forums? At the VERY least an 'outsider' can cast a fresh eye or offer a different perspective and that is very valuable.

"gee your limey warm flat soapy beer that tastes like hobo's ass sure does suck"

& Spurs had a great season.

Thanks for your considered input to the project jmw. Any contribution from the folk that the information on a sticky thread or regularly updated thread regarding the London beer scene is aimed at, is welcome. After all. it is for those people that aren't locals that the info would be supposed to inform and help.

Is anyone familiar with using google earth/google maps to create a map of pubs, shops and breweries etc?
Or has anyone an idea to an alternative?

Maybe we could just do "the ultimate London thread" or something, so there's just one thread to link to people when they ask what to do in London. Oh and have a separate discussion thread so the only posts in it are relevant ones.

That seems the simplest bestest easiest done idea then any add London threads can be merged

I guess I'll get this started. In my opinion, these places should definitely be included:
    The Kernel
Craft Beer Co Clerkenwell and Islington
    Cask Pub & Kitchen
    Euston Tap
    Kris Wines
    Utobeer

    Others to consider:
    Fuller's Brewery
    King William IV
    Dukes Brew & Que
    BrewDog Camden and Shoreditch
    **** Tavern
    Earl of Essex
    Craft Beer Co Brixton
    The Rake
    The White Horse
    Southampton Arms
    Union Tavern
    Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese
    Royal Oak
    Jerusalem Tavern
    Drink of Fulham

Here's a Google Map with all of the above: http://goo.gl/maps/PU4te.
I'm personally not a huge fan of all of these but I think they're a decent mix of places that a visitor might be interested in. Thoughts? Suggestions on places to add or remove would be appreciated.

Deeblo's onto a good start. I generally agree with the top list as being the 'must visit' places. The **** Tavern, Union Tavern, and King William IV do such a good job at showcasing local beer that I'd strongly encourage their inclusion.

Creating a thread with a simple post of recommendations broken into digestable groups (pubs, brewpubs, shops etc) would be a nice idea. London's such a vibrant beer town (40+ breweries now) that maintaining a coherent set of recommendations will be tough without creating a lot of noise for the reader to cut through.

As Deeblo suggested, we could agree to keep the thread free of clutter and have a seperate thread or group chat set up for discussion of edits etc.

    To add a few ideas:
    - Brewpubs and brewery tap rooms are really on the rise in London. Places such as the **** Tavern, the Earl of Essex, London Fields Brewery Tap, Tap East should be included. Even places that are only open a few days a week (Redchurch tap room, Camden Brewery) might be worth including.
    - A few of the more 'traditional' spots should certainly be included (Churchill Arms, Cheshire Cheese etc)
    - Places to drink quality beer near touristy locations would help visitors. Thus the newly-opened Lyric, Old Coffee House, and The Harp might be worth considering.

Add Partizan onto the Kernel, as they are both open on a saturday and a really short walk from each other
