    No big deal.
    It's only beer. LOL.

I remember in college it was either Guiness or Dragon Stout (The one from Jamaica, Not New Holland).

I found a 6 sixer of the Dragon Stout about a year and enjoyed it thoroughly. In fact I think for the price point it is by far one of the best that you can get in a six pack.

Anthony Bourdain seems to always be drinking Guiness, and he supposedly knows about a lot of stuff.

From people in the know I have heard that Guinness let a portion of the brew get infected with Lactobacillus, kill the infection and mix that back into the main batch. This gives the sour twang of Guinness. So make of that what you will.

I like, but it is not same thing. Today I prefer guinness for Irish drinks.

At the time when Guinness began his brewery my distinctions were definitely an issue. My OP was however to bring out the fact that Guinness involved a family of London brewers to brew his black stuff.Although British owned and with four of the five breweries overseas Guinness is always passed off as the essence of Ireland.

Yeah, it reads as if what is going on is that Guinness feels "sour" or "lactic" notes are a "negative" aspect to many drinkers, so their spokesman instead talks of the "mystery" of it's "legendary process"

There's no doubt that these constant Guinness threads reveal a profound misunderstanding and confusion by many beer drinkers about the many stouts Diageo markets under the "Guinness" brand - and it does seem that, rather than try to explain things, the corporation revels in the confusion, er, "mystery".

I mean, just look at their US website's FAQ which STILL proclaims:

Even though the labels for Extra Stout in the US clearly note "Product of Canada"
(ditto for a different version of ES sold in Canada, brewed by Labatt).

That's an old homebrewers trick to duplicate Guinness stout, and you'd get the lacto by adding a small amount of uncrushed malt grains to the room temperature beer. That quote by their spokesman does seem to suggest that it's something similar yet different, though.

    +1

That's the rumour in Dublin, though I've never heard any Guinness employee state it outright.

He knows about a lot of stuff concerning food and food preparation, he knows diddly about beer -- I'd never use him as a source for it. They had to practically force him to drink Great Lakes beers when he taped a Cleveland show.

Even here in Ireland it's not as popular as it used to be, still available in every bar and alcohol shop though. They are trying to get in on the craft beer act and have released a few new beers here, Guiness Hop House 13, Dublin Porter and a West Indies Porter. I still enjoy a pint of Smithwicks now and again. They also have put out a Pale ale and Blonde ale.

Had my first left Hand Milk Stout Nitro last night. Despite my former response, I may never have another Guiness
