Getting ready to buy a stir plate. Do I want one that also heats? Or just get one that stirs?

I've never had a need for a heated stir plate for yeast starters. They might even be detrimental, potentially overtheating yeast that has settled out.

Are stir plates really so advantageous? I've never used one. I just shake it when I walk by. Yeast never seem to have a problem. What am I missing? In fact, I've even given up on yeast nutrient, as I don't see it being advantageous in my situations.

KPlen, do you need the heat? I would prefer submerging the starter vessel in a temperature-controlled water bath (can just be a pot of water at your desired temperature).

No need for heat, room temp is usually fine.

Careful, as some Laboratory stirplates actually produce heat as a by-product of the motor (I have one which I no longer use), which you don't really want.
