I didn't want to threadjack, so just a simple question. I'm wondering if I can use a growler on top of a stir plate. I hear a lot of guys use Erlenmeyer flasks, probably because it's tempered. Call me cheap, but I don't want to buy additional glassware. What do you use?

I use a flask. Most (but apparently not all) folks find it difficult or impossible to keep the stir bar from flying off of the center in a (not flat bottomed) growler.

So it's not a matter of the stir bar chattering its way through the bottom of a growler?

Haven't heard of that particular problem.

I did find a growler that had nearly a flat bottom and I could get the stir bar to stay centered, which I used initially when I got a stir plate, but quickly replaced it with a 2L flask and then added a 5L as well. The flasks are awesome for the boiling & cooling in one vessel aspect.

I use growlers on my stir plate as well as flasks. They are noisy but seem to work fine for me. Some growlers work better than others, their bottoms are very flat or even. Put some water in your growler and see how easy they stir. Pick a good one and go.

I have always used a growler on my stirplate. I have to move around a little until I find the right position to keep the contents stirring properly, but it's not a big deal.
