The Stir Starter is inexpensive, effective, and comes with a lifetime warranty, though seemingly very few people have had to take advantage of it.

    I would get the 2L flask. I have a 2L and sometimes that's not big enough, so I also have a 5L.

Stir Starter is probably the best solution. If you really want to economize, go to their website and they have pretty decent instructions on a DIY stir plate.

Definitely go at least 2L (my 3L overflowed last night when 1.6 liters of wort starting working). I find the econ flasks on Amazon do a good job . . . I don't boil in them although it could probably take it. Also, Stir Starter plates are available on Amazon now.

You can make a stir plate for around $15-$20. Depending on where you get your supplies from. eBay is a good source as well as an IT department, haha. Not too difficult, low voltage stuff and fairly straight forward.

I got the stir plate project done. It is rocking and rolling. I'll try and post a video. Thanks for all the help.
