I was thinking the same thing. Didn't want to waste it and all.

You are correct that Stouts can have a thinner mouthfeel. This however is a Milk Stout brewed with Lactose. Milk Stouts are known for a fuller body due to the unfermentable sugars in the lactose sugar used.

Either way I dig this beer and it's nice to see lower ABV options.

Reading this thread really has my hopes up. By the sounds of all the new kids decrying this beer for being thin, watery, not bitter enough, too bitter, low on coffee flavor and pleading for a higher ABV, I'd say it may actually be a lot closer to a REAL milk stout that I expected Stone to do.

We need more milk stouts out here, its really become a pretty rare style.

That is a fair distinction straight from BJCP guidelines. And now that I've actually had this beer 5 or 6 times, I would argue despite some other comments to the contrary, this milk stout has a terrific mouthfeel that is perfectly appropriate for the style. This has become my regular nightcap - it's great for when you want one more beer that you don't want to regret the next day. I am loving this one right now.

If it isn't a BA 10.00%++ rare release now a days then people will always find something to complain about.

    lol what?

Anyways, HUGE variation in my six pack. First two had zero aroma and just a mildly sweet flavor. Third had big coffee and was much better.

Still wasn't that good. Another miss to go along with Go To. Stop copying Carton.

Had it last night with a tasting group. It had some coffee aroma but little to no coffee flavor - it was roasty. The body was thin and the finish was one notish. We were disappointed and rated it a 2.75/5. There are far better milk stouts out there for our tastes. Glad some others are finding it more appealing. Cheers!

I was not excited about the 4.2% either, but the beer is so very good, I can forgive it. Milk stouts generally skew lower for the sweet taste. This beer was not overly sweet, it was balanced well. Had one today for the first time and it was one of a handful of beers that I rated over a 4.4.

After all the negative reviews, I was kinda scared but I love milk stouts so I got some. It's OK but not great. Not nearly as bad as some of you are saying though.

So you liked the beer until you found out that its ABV is 4.4%?

This article gives credit to Mackeson of Hythe in Kent for the first commercial example of a milk stout.

    http://allaboutbeer.com/article/milk-stout-2/

Further on you'll read that it originally had a pretty low FG then it dropped even lower to 3.8%.

Furthermore the BJCP (everyone's favorite end-all-be-all on style guidelines) lists ABV variations from 4%-6%
    http://www.bjcp.org/2008styles/style13.php#1b

So, Stone, it seems, was trying to do something more along the lines of a REAL milk stout. Until they messed it all up by adding coffee.
