Was in a store today and the 2010 bottle was cheaper than the 2012 bottle on their shelf. Surprised me as I would have thought it would be the reverse. Is this common or is the new 2012>>2010 vintage with 2 years on it?

Belmont? I saw the same thing there a few weeks ago. Maybe the distributor had a bunch of old stock and sold it to the stores cheaper to try and clear it out.

I bought some Fuller's Vintage Ale '08 for $7 in VT not too long ago when '11 vintage was still $10 a bottle. Economics my friend.

A shop near me has 2009 Old Stock BW from North Coast for less than 2012. Now a smart BA would jump on that ( I did).

Fresh it's really hoppy, older will be less hoppy.
One is not inherently better than the other. I'd buy them both, and see which way you prefer it.

Yep at Belmont. I grabbed a bottle of the 2010 vintage to give it a shot. Now to hope they kept it in decent conditions for the 2 years or so.

This would be my guess as well. Or the store has had it that long and it just trying to sell it.

If you folks would stop talking about how aged beer is awesome, this would be a more common occurrence. I do love how spotting a beer you would age in a store is a 'find' and a 3 week old ipa is a crime against humanity.

My local ages beer to sell it for a premium.

I had a find recently - a 2009 Older Viscosity on the shelf!!! Was awesome....

Old Guardian does not age well in my experience. That's probably why its cheaper.

I have one of those nearby too; looking at the prices on some of the bottles I thought I'd walked into one of those record stores taking a cavalier swing at disposable income (Yes, I want that slightly frayed Atom Heart Mother; no, I won't pay $40 for it...)

Also re: 3-week-old ipa crime, funny to think that's how important freshness has become for the style given its roots.

I had a 2011 cellared properly last weekend, it was pretty dang tasty. Doubt a distributor would keep at constant temps.
