We haven't seen this yet in NJ but it looks like its going to be using all or at least mostly European Hops and Malts which really surprised me for Stone's revised Pale Ale. I was expecting Mosaic, Citra, mabey Neslon Sav, and/or any of thoses other "new" hops that have been gaining alot of traction. Instead they went German style on this American Pale ale! Have to say, I give them credit for experimenting on new German Hops but what do you guys think?

I think if anyone can bring out the great flavors of those German hops it would be the brewers at Stone! They now how to use hops well. With that said I look forward to trying it when I see it.

Their Gotterdammerung IPA from a coupla years ago used pilsener malts and German hops and it was awesome...

A local brewery uses Magum, hersbrucker, and tettnang as kettle hops. Hersbrucker, and tettnang were used as dry hops for a local pilsner. At 45 IBU, it's nearly that of a pale ale.

Stone should just go ahead and do a real lager, with Bavarian Lager yeast, and call it a IPL.

Not sounding like an upgrade, but I'll be interested to try.

Any word from Stone why they are putting so many beers out as 2.0 recently?

yea, I was surprised as well. If this is Stone's take on a modern american pale but use European hops, does this mean stone thinks the future is not in American gown hops?

As far as I know its only for revisions of previous beers. Although the tagline "2.0" is rather un-interesting its lets the consumer know its in relation to a previous similar product. But if a new consumer never tried the original product then calling it 2.0 is pointless because they never got to know 1.0.

I'm not sure WHERE the hops come from matters. The magic of the american craft movement is that we're so open minded to all styles, yeasts, hops etc. It's a melting pot and that's why we do so well. That said the flavors mentioned aren't bad, but the original stone pale ale was just great. If they aren't going with a zombie dust type "fake pale ale" I don't get how this is a better profile. I like the toasted caramel malts with a nice hop finish of the pale ale. Oh well. Bring in the new stone, I'lll do a case

It was memorable, Gotterdamerung. I would buy the pale ale to try it.

Maybe they are trying to gain some ground in Germany before the brewery opens. I imagine this beer would be even better over there once they are brewing and can use the hops as fresh as they come.

Same reason cars designs change every 4 or 5 years: marketing.

But they don't call their new car Ford Focus 2.0. It keeps the same name with a new look.

Mandarina Bavaria is such a great hop. If they secured a good supply, why not design a beer around it?

Why do they use so many NZ and AU hops in Enjoy By? I think they like the unique aromas.

Magnum is a classic Pale Ale hop, so I do not think they are going too crazy. It is not like they are using classic noble hops. Some of these 'new' hops have lineage to European hops as well.

Edit - read up on Mandarina Bavaria and it was cultivated from Cascade, so there is that too.
