I agree with everything you said. 2.0 tastes too similar to every other tropical/fruity D/IPA on the market. I think the only reason I would buy 2.0 again is because of the price and I can pretty much count on it being fresh.

so..... the reason I got into craft beer (specifically IPA) was becasue of Stone Ruination .. so yes I am sad to see an old friend go away (hint hint Stone... special releases ;-)) with that said...

Stone Ruination... High Alcohol (Super unleaded) Piney Hop Bomb with a lot of SWEET on the end.. almost too sweet after 22 Ozs

2.0 .... Still got the Super Unleaded, still piney, the resin is a little deeper and the hop experience is less (licking the butt of a Christmas tree) and more complex. There is a lot more going on in 2.0 (grapefruit, pine, resin, pineapple, malt, ocean breezes (oh wait thats after drinkign the 22 ozs.. no ocean breezes) )) its just so much more compelx than the original Ruination. It still has me guessing as to what I am experiencing and that to me makes it that much better. In 5-10 years we will be bored with this and Stone will have to make 3.0 so the fun continues..

But all in all Stone continues to impress, and share their wealth across the craft beer industry at a rate which very few can compete with.

I enjoyed the new version way, way more than the old version. Old Ruination is a definition of a bitter bomb. Personally found it annoying that the beer was brewed specifically to see if you could handle that level of bitterness. New Ruination is softer, more flavorful with hop juiciness. It's way better for me.

The 2.0 very well may be my new go-to reasonably priced DIPA 6-pack. I like it quite a bit better than the original for all reasons previously stated in this thread by those that share my viewpoint.

I prefer 1.0 to 2.0. In my view, I thought 1.0 was more original and, strangely enough, more balanced. Both are bitter bombs, but I got a big medicinal note on the close of the 2.0 that 1.0 managed to avoid for me. So while I like the open of 2.0, with its fruit elements, 1.0 ultimately was one of my go-to DIPAs, and one I'll miss.

My vote is for 2.0. My initial reaction echoes what many have said here. Old Ruination was a great beer but verrry bitter and dominated by resiny pine. Rather one-dimensional, not in a bad way. 2.0 has a lot more grapefruit-like citrus and depth of hop characteristics, a more complex beer though still on the far end of the bittering hop spectrum. Note this is from memory of 1.0, I don't think a side by side would be appropriate since they were never brewed at the same time.

I like both, tried them side by side - two six packs worth, perfectly happy with 2.0 going forward. Brighter, cleaner, slightly different hop profile with a little less malt presence, imho

The new one is great but the old one is more memorable for me. It was my first taste of Stone and it wowed me. I liked that it wasn't smooth and gave me an aggressive vibe.

The newer version went in the direction of Enjoy By IPA, like it better but doesn't ruin my palate as stated.

1.0 was very good but 2.0 is fantastic. Love the hop profile and would echo many of the same things others have said (1.0 is a pine/bitter bomb, 2.0 is more citrusy/smooth, etc.) Oh, and it's a friggin bargain compared to 1.0 - Great addition and in markets like mine where their aren't a TON of great DIPA options (especially ones that are fresh) it's a great option.

Finally got around to buying the 2.0, and I'm drinking it now.

    Woooooahh....

I much prefer 2.0. The original was good but was basically just a stronger version of their regular IPA. This new one tastes much closer to Enjoy By. It's got all of the ridiculously bitter citrus flavor you want, plus tons of dank sweet tropical fruit flavors. It's awesome.

Glad you like the new Stone Ruination 2.0! For perspective, I'd thought I'd let you know that wasn't quite the case for the recipe for the original Stone Ruination IPA. What that recipe was, was an amalgamation of the recipes from our run of the Stone 2nd Anniversary IPA thru Stone 5th Anniversary IPA. When we decided we were going to break from that tradition with the Stone 6th Anniversary Smoked Porter, we realized that we didn't like the idea of not getting our annual mega hop bomb fix...and that we loved the idea of having such a beer be available all the time.

Thus, in June of 2002 the world was introduced to the very first full time brewed and bottled West Coast Double IPA on the planet: Stone Ruination IPA

While we'd set some precedence for Stone Ruination IPA with those ever-more-intense anniversary IPA recipes, it was still quite an outlier for the time. We loved it, but there wasn't really anything like it on the market, and we knew it was going to be quite shocking for most folks' palates. Thus, the name was a result of the beer, not the other way around. We didn't brew that recipe to challenge anyone's ability to handle it, we brewed it because we loved that style of beer. However, we recognized that it did indeed challenge many people's palates, thus I wrote the label and named it Ruination to help set expectations for someone when they were looking at it on the shelf and contemplating buying it. I've always believed in being up front with folks and communicating as best we can what expectations for a beer should be. True, we often do it with a creative twist, as you can either write it in a boring way, or hopefully in a way that captures people's imagination and represents a bit of our own personality.

So, stoked you are enjoying the new 2.0 version as much as we are. Cheers to the continuing era of more and more amazing craft beer.

I enjoy 2.0 a lot more than I ever did the original. Funny that for all the people who prefer the original, they weren't buying it often enough to warrant stone to keep it. I expect to see more of this in the future as the pokemon culture keeps growing.

I could drink 2.0 allllllll the time. In fact, I think it's become my favorite Stone beer.
