Picked up a 6pk of this new Stone offering yesterday. Really diggin' this beer. Stone has gotten a lot of criticism lately for the new beer they've been putting out but I would say they did a nice job on this one. Most saisons lately have been more like funky, farmhouse ales but this is a nice, modern interpretation on the classic Belgian-style saison. Great use of spices and lemon zest. I would like to hear what others who have tried this already think. Yay or nay?

Completey Disagree. I thought it was more of a modern take on a Belgian classic.

Yes, it is a modern take on a Belgian classic, should have put that in there. But do you completely disagree with my assessment of it? I thought it was a solid beer.

You do know that Saison and Farmhouse Ale is the same style, right? Kind of like Scotch Ale and Wee Heavy.

I have not had this beer yet. Below is the description from the Stone website:

    “First Release: April 2014

In spring 2011, Stone bought the farm, literally, taking over 19 acres of fertile Southern California soil where we now grow pristine fruits, vegetables, herbs and more for our Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens restaurants. A taste of our homespun farm-to-tableism is provided in this farmhouse ale stoked with lemon zest, plus lemon thyme and lavender straight from Stone Farms. This spring-to-summer saison is citric and herbal on the palate with a dry, peppery finish. Thanks to the infusion of fresh West Coast ingredients, this isn’t your everyday saison. It’s our saison—100% Stone. Celebrate the sunny season with an authentic taste of our farm and, with it, our commitment to quality.”

Last year Victory first produced their version of a Saison: Swing Session Saison, Victory uses peppercorns, orange peel and fresh lemon zest. I enjoy Swing.

Last year there were a number of BAs commenting that Swing was not an ‘authentic’ Saison since spices were added. Some Belgian brewers use spice additions to their Saison beers so I personally don’t subscribe to that thinking.

I suspect that some BAs will not view Stone Saison as being traditional because of the spices they added.

I will try Stone Saison next time I see it on tap.

    Cheers!

Yes, I know they are the same. However, saying "funky" saison just didn't sound right IMO. Lol

As I'm downing my Ommegang Hennepin, I'm thinking there's no way Stone's Saison could match it. And I'm a Stone lover....of course I'll be the judge of that...
