I just heard the Fear Movie Lions w/Passion Fruit, Orange ,and Guava is being pushed a week. I'm in San Diego now. Currently in Gas Lamp so near the ball park tap room, but then staying in Vista for the weekend and leaving Sunday. I have my Stone growler that was a total PITA to fit into my luggage. It's not going home empty. So where do you suggest a fill, and what would you put in it? Looking for whatever I can't get in Denver!! Thanks!
First off fill up something better than Stone beer. Growlers can be from any company you just have to tape the label for a brewery to fill up if it isn't their company growler. You've got a lot of options on the way over to Vista. Are you looking for IPAs/stouts/what?? Would definitely recommend sealing the top of your growler well and bubble wrapping your growler.
I'll let the locals chime in, but I can't imagine bringing one growler to bring back to CO and choosing something from Stone. SOOOOOO many better options in SD.
Most every brewery in SD fills crowlers now. Check out half door brewing or resident brewing both in gaslamp area and walkable. Also, Stone...cringe haha
I second both those. Half door still has no canning/bottling operation although I've never seen them filling growlers/crowlers. South Park beer company has been putting out better beer these days too.
I thought it was a California thing that they could only fill their own growlers. So I lugged a Stone growler just for the FML variation. Sounds like Oceanside is celebrating their anniversary this weekend so we may go there. We're otherwise planning many beer visits around Vista and I really want to stop at Lost Abby!
It used to be, I'd say about 95% of the breweries in California now fill any growler provided that the label is covered with something (if it's not a growler from that particular brewery). It would be wise to check the growler fill policy online or just call ahead of time if it's not online. If you're going to be in Vista, then downtown Vista is pretty neat. There's a bunch of brewery tasting rooms and a few good restaurants. If you don't mind a 10 minute drive, then you can head to Carlsbad and hit up Pizza Port, Burgeon, and any of the nicer restaurants there.
