Stoneface just announced that their IPA is now available in cans at the brewery. Will be released to stores in the coming weeks

It's $10 for a 4 pack of 12oz cans. I've never seen a brewery do 4 packs of 12oz cans, only 16oz. Second of all I think it's a little pricey. Not sure why they didn't just go with the 16oz. If they I insisted on 12oz. Then 6 packs would have been nice

    Thoughts?

I'll take 48oz for $10 over $6-7 for 500mL every day of the week. Not just for reduced cost per ounce, but ease of transport, crushing cans on the golf course (bottles frowned upon), etc. Love this move.

Captain's Daughter is 4 packs of 12oz, correct?

I think the price is fine and much better than their previous format. I wouldn't have minded 16oz, but I won't complain!

    G-bot is 4 packs too, 12 oz.

I do like this format and it is better then the bottle price but $12 for a 6er of 12oz cans seems more palatable and more in line with comparable beers then $10 for 4.
Shit JA is putting out 12 packs of Hoponious Union for $15.

I believe Night Shift's first foray into cans was 4-packs of 12 oz. They then moved to 16 oz and kept the price basically the same.

I have to imagine Great Rhythm's cans were eating into Stoneface's business pretty significantly.

    ...But it wouldn't be a $12 6er if the 4pks are $10, it'd be closer to $15. Would you rather have a $15 6-pk or $10 4-pk?

I think this represents a 36% price discount per oz. To get to $12 6-er would have taken a full chop in half of the original price per oz. I doubt they have the economics of scale for something like that.

I'll gladly take Stoneface IPA in cans. Honestly, the fact that they were in bottles made me only spring for them when the bottles were really fresh. Hopefully the price will stay around $10 per in these parts.

The cans are nice, but the fact that the beer inside is better swings it more for me.

I've always thought their Pale Ale > IPA, would've rather seen it canned 1st - in 6 packs.

Either way, their 500ml packaging is a total dead end . I enjoy their beer on draft when I see it but never buying bottles.

Hard to say exactly why but I think MBC will be the last brewery to ever give up the 500ml format - and seemingly never will.

MBC fairly recently underwent a price INCREASE. They restrict supply (probably quite smartly to ensure demand and freshness) and it's certainly working for them.

The expansion to the new brewery will likely throw their business model out the window. They will either have to add canning for their current footprint or distribute bottles across the country. I don't see their current model being scalable on a national level.

The shelves of dusty MBC bottles I see around Boston say otherwise. I don't think a brewery in the current market can get by on one-off brewery releases of IPAs in an overpriced format. Almost every other brewery peer of theirs has moved to cans at a better price point. Their beer is no better than peers (I think it's actually second tier). Also, I think the message of "we charge more to pay our people more and give to charity" rings a bit hollow since their peers do the same at a lower price point.

From a shopper's perspective it sure never seems like anything except their IPAs is ever fresh or in demand.

But you're right that something must be working for them. I yet again found myself in a bar last week that had pretty much everything priced at $7ish for a 16 oz pour except for MBC which was $10 for 12 ounces.

ETA: sorry for basically duplicating Enron's post. I hadn't refreshed the page.

This is a Boston-only problem I think, if it exists at all over the past year. Literally can't keep it in stock in NH and people who visit from other parts of the country tell me the same. My distributor hasn't had any products carry-over a single week in like a year (as in my distributor gets in and sells everything to stores every single week). Everything I have is brewed within last 3 weeks (even the darker offerings).

Their bottles sit on shelves for a very long time in Vermont. I am a fan of their beer, but cannot remember the last time I made a purchase.

There is a lot of their (MBC) bottles sitting on shelves in my area as well. Lunch sells, but lots of others are sitting there months out.
