I could not agree with you more. I know a few snobs and I try to avoid them. I hate it when they get in the mood to talk about how many rare beers they drink.
But the chances of beer snobbery going extinct is low.

Any time I've ever come across some pretentious douche being a snob about beer/wine/whiskey/coffee/cigars etc I just call them out immediately and they typically shut right the hell up and go back to blogging about how IPAs suck and everyone who says they like IPAs is lying.

If one lives long enough, there is ample experience available with know-it-alls of every category to last lifetimes. Things really never change. So many folks are so insecure that they can actually think that getting bent out of shape over beer (or anything) is justified. The people that need to prove that they are cool never succeed. Let the flakes not bother you and cherish the cool ones. And I ain't talking about the snow!

I try so hard not to be a snob, I really do. Sometimes it's tough though. I was at the Green Man Bootsy release the other day waiting in line for my two bottles. The bottles were being sold at the bar so some of the people were planning on ordering drinks at the same time. This couple in front of me was looking at the menu and the girl says to the guy "What does quaffable mean?" I fully expected the dude to know what it means and inform her (yes I profiled them, assuming that the dude knew more about beer than she did and was probably the only reason they were there in the first place) but he replies, "I don't know." My initial thought was "Uh, why are they waiting in line for a sour beer at this tiny brewery but they have no idea what quaffable means?" Later on, I gave it a second thought and realized that the right thing to do in that situation was to politely inform them that quaffable is synonymous with drinkable. But instead, I said nothing and missed out on possibly making a couple of friends. I felt like a snob, but in the moment I was cold and just wanted to get my two bottles, finish my beer and leave. I'm not gonna get too bent out of shape about it of course, live and learn, but yes, it's best to be aware of how we behave around people so as not to alienate them from this wonderful hobby we all share. Good thread.

Of course no one would ever declare themselves or their friends a snob even if they were one

In all seriousness though, that actually reminds me of this one guy. So I used to work for a very popular brewery several years ago. This dude walks up wearing a black shirt with huge white font reading "BEER SNOB." Of course I had to ask, "Really dude? I'm sorry, but why are you wearing that shirt?" Sure enough, dude launches into a speech about how BMC is the devil and people need to realize what good beer is and goes on and on about why he's proud to be a beer snob and I don't really remember exactly what he said but trust me it was unconvincing. Anyways, I guess there's at least one self-proclaimed beer snob out there and he's an ass.

^^^^^We seem to be following each other this evening eh @rgordon ?
For real. I admit, I'm sick of hearing the question "Do you guys carry any Russian River?" when they don't even distribute anywhere close to here, but I never laugh. I bite my tongue and say "Nope, they only distribute their beer in California and surrounding states."

Self Identifying as a snob says a lot about a person's insecurities. Considering that by definition snobs believe they are superior to others for their depth of appreciation and knowledge about a certain subject. With society's ever shifting norm of people trying to make themselves be interesting because of their knowledge about something instead of just being interested in it it's not surprising to see this be so prevalent in craft beer. The same reason I avoid self identified "foodies" is why I avoid "beer snobs".

I read about a survey where they ask people if they are above average drivers, and something like 90% say yes.

I know 5 hop varieties. At least.

And I'll buy anyone a beer that wants one whilst standing next to me.

I don't know if that makes me a "snob," but I do know that I like beer. Whether it's Heady or Abrasive or one of the beers in the "Beer Of The Month" 12-pack my wife has been purchasing for me for 3 years for Christmas that includes beverages that are not on any "snob" list.

    Drink and let drink.
