As Justice Potter Stewart said... Can't help you on the definitions of facial fashion, but a neck beard is just something you know when you meet them.

i can understand not liking people based on their personality and your interactions with them, but beards? really? i've had a beard off and on since... well, you know, puberty. i didn't realize this was so offensive.

I think the original post reads a tad presumptuous and accusatory - or really just missing some info. I don't understand the snobbish act at play...what happened?

Don't understand the correlation here. Why assume the person thinks they're better than the other because they mentioned a few hop varietals?

There's no need to be insecure about not knowing much about beer, just ask the bartender for some insight on the beers they're pouring. I've always found this approach fruitful. Did your friends have a run in with someone insulting?

People who don't buy beers for strangers are snobs? So everyone in the bar who didn't buy me a drink is a snob? Again, I don't get it.

This thread reminds me that so many of us have different definitions of "snob" in the beer world. Too often it's assumed that it's someone who only drinks craft and doesn't like the taste of most macros. That's not a snob. Snobs are people who look down upon, and ridicule, others and insinuate their product choice is inferior to theirs. And it works both ways...craft fans --> to macro fans, as well as macro fans --> craft fans.

Oh come on. You haven't talked much beer if you haven't run into some douche canoe that dumps on what someone is drinking because it has or doesn't have a particular hop.

Common sense would dictate that they most likely wouldn't be worried about it if they hadn't run into someone like that.

Your strawman is showing. He didn't say that people that don't buy beers for strangers are snobs. He told snobs to stop being snobs and buy someone a beer.

The only people that have dumped on me for what I'm drinking are people like my Miller-loving father in law...or my Boston Lager-or-bust dad... or my best friend busting my balls...but it's all in good fun with them. Guess I've been lucky otherwise.

But that's the crux of the post that seems missing. Lets hear what happened. Those are the specific acts that should be called out so people know to stop doing it

Still a disconnect. If we're saying help out someone who seems confused, there are more helpful ways than just buying them a random beer they may not like. Talk to them and give some advice based on what they like and don't like - then maybe offer to buy them that beer. I'd find the advice itself most helpful.

You're reading too literally. He's basically telling beer snobs to stop being assholes and do something nice for a change.

I have to say, I'm seeing the snobby aspects more and more in my local area and its really turning me off from going out to places I enjoy.

Ive been trying to be more open and fair with my attitude(snobbery). Instead of looking down at certain styles ive been revisiting them, literally! For example; i opened a TENFIDY and while that warmed a bit i sipped a Coors light and Old Style. The contrast was fun to explore. I do this with sours and wilds etc. Not sure if it keeps me grounded but at least i know my styles a bit better and get out of my comfort zone.

The whole neckbeard thing is just kind of a meme at this point that's applied to everything geeky. Nothing wrong with beards!

Not to hijack but for the purpose of clarification, there is a difference between

    and

    Former: Neckbeard.
Latter: Frontman of an awesome rock band.

Former has got to be real life version of Comic Book Guy from the Simpsons. Latter looks kinda pissed to be honest. Perhaps someone in the audience went all beer snob on him.

Is there a beer snob perception/ problem in Germany? I'd love to get a perspective from a country where great tasting beer hasn't suddenly become novel in the past 25 years.

The former is a pretty well known meme, actually. Partially with different backgrounds. I guess that's just Neil being invested in his performance (they do write energetic songs).

Honestly, not that I know of. I wouldn't be surprised if there are a bunch of new-age green hipsters that kind of have taken on some of the craft scene due to it being local and whatnot but I haven't really met any snobs.

I mean there are people who still think that most American alcohol is watery swill or that Germans make the "best beer" but that's just your usual xenophobe that has never been really been anyhwere and known anything else. Mostly it's just a thing of preference. You wanna pound those 5.0 cans for getting shitfaced? You go right ahead.

I actually get pretty excited when I hear the next to me say something like " I normally drink bud light, but I want to try something new". I find that some bartenders have this written script when it comes to these situations, So I usually try to jump in and help that guy out.....

LOL. I was just thinking how everyone is better than the beer snob.

In reality though, I think the beer industry is a perfect haven for snobs. It just comes with the territory of so many different breweries/beers and hard to get brews. Kind of like the wine industry. Douches on the other hand. They are what keeps me from going to bars.
    Anyway, drink on and enjoy.

    Cheers.

If walking in to a bar with 15+ handles and being uninspired every once in a while counts as being a snob....I am there. Although, I would never down talk another and always try to make friends and inform where needed

Show me 15 handles - I know I can find one to love - at least for the short term.
