I'll be driving through Vermont (from Boston to the far reaches of Upstate NY) next Friday with my wife and small kids, and I would like to stop somewhere and pick up some great beer that I can't buy locally (in MA). Any recommendations on where to stop? What should I be looking for when I do? Not looking for the whales - just good VT beers that aren't widely distributed.

Sorry if there have already been similar posts, but every search I did just gave me lists of posts with people looking for Heady, SoS, etc...

Will you be on I91 then 89North? If so, Beverage Baron in Barre is pretty good shop. Also Hunger Mountain Coop in Montpelier. In Waterbury there is a Craft Beer Cellar location too.

Really depends on where in Vermont you will be. If you are up by Burlington, hit the Beverage Warehouse in Winooski.

Sorry, my entire trip through Vermont will be on 89.

Well Bevie is off exit 15 of 89 if you get that far north. Craft Beer Cellar off exit 10 in Waterbury too.

Beverage Baron is off of exit 7 a bit and is an ok shop. Hunger Mountain is also a bit off of exit 8. Beware of the construction on 89 at exit 10. You will need to be in the right lane if you are going to stop at Craft Beer Cellar which I'd personally recommend. Craft Beer cellar is also directly across the street from Prohibition Pig which can be a great place for lunch and a beverage. They routinely have Hillstead Farm, Alchemist's Focal Banger, and their own brews on tap to choose from. I also believe that their is a newer craft bottle store in Williston off of exit 12 out behind the Best Buy in that area which is pretty close to the interstate. I haven't been in this one personally so I can't comment. Beverage warehouse in Winooski as stated above is the largest Bottleshop in the state I believe. Odds are you can get what you are looking for if your taking your time traveling.

Thanks for all the shop ideas, now for the beers...

Can anyone recommend a few VT only beers that I should definitely look out for? I love IPAs, but am generally willing to try anything! Thanks again!

I'm not sure how easy Crop Idletyme IPA is to find, but the two times I've had it, I've really loved it and regretted not buying at least one extra bottle.

All the IPA's I've had from Foley Bros were good and will second the Crop Idletyme IPA as being another one. The Mozaic IPA from Lost Nation is good.

Foley Brothers, Crop, Rock Art....all seemed pretty easy to get up there and I've been impressed with everything I've had

In the Burlington Area/Northern VT :
14th star: Tribute, Valor and Maple Breakfast stout
Frost: Pale ale and Another VT IPA
    Zero Gravity: Conehead
Simple roots is also worth a try

Um, hello? 89 runs through NH, too! Don't forget to stop for some of our Stoneface IPA! Last I heard, you can't get it in Vermont and, if you haven't had it, you really had ought to.

NH is truly the red-headed step-child of IPAs; sandwiched in between VT, Maine and Mass. Can we change our state motto to: We have a good IPA too!

This trip won't take me past there (93 to 89), but I was in NH last month and stopped at Smuttynose and Stoneface. The new Smuttynose factory and Hayseed Restaurant were great, and of course the Stoneface beers were too.

Oh. OK, just so long as you didn't forget about us.
Wherever you end up going, if you see any McNeill's you should probably grab some - just because, well, it's McNeill's - but if you're north of 89 you most likely won't.

If your in southern NH near Stoneface about 9 miles away is Garrison City Beerworks in Dover, these guys are making some great IPA's and APA's and are the surely worth the effort. There Khaos DIPA IMO is the best one I've had made in NH.

Tomorrow's the day of my drive north... Any last minute recommendations? Probably will stop at Craft Beer Cellar in Waterbury or Beverage Warehouse in Winooski. Thanks again to everyone who commented!

I'd be interested in hearing your opinion on Craft Beer Cellar and Beverage Warehouse after you make the trek. I will be in Waterbury next Friday then Burlington Saturday before heading to the Adirondacks for a week. I was going to get beer for vacation while in VT and wondering which would be better.
