My dear beerfriends here on BA. I am gonna stop here on BA cause i am noticing that this site is not bringing me the things i always liked to read about. I can only read treads about how good it is to stay in Brussels and how interesting the sours from Cantillon are.

The only purpose Cantillon has for me is that i can trade with it for non sour beers. Two weeks ago i was in Belgium again at a beershop and after that i needed to go to Brussels and buy me some sours. Lucky enough for me the shop had all the beers i was looking for and it felt as a big relief that i was able to buy the bottles in that shop so that i not had to go to Brussels.

Whenever i posted i did not like Brussels that was coming out of my heart. I do not like the town and i never liked it. That is why i posted my comment on the 1000nd tread about Brussels. Tut wrote a comment on how i reacted and i knew he was right. Thanks Tut! (i mean that)

That is why i will close my account tonight and i will NEVER re-open it. I am done here.

All the best to you and i hope that the rest find here what they are looking for.

    Thijs

I would be sorry to see you go Brabander. I've always enjoyed your posts here (including your disdain for Brussels and sours...each to their own!). You've always seemed like a great BA to me.

This ruined my day. I can only hope you will reconsider but if your mind is set then I wish you all the best. You will be missed dearly and hopefully some day when I get over there we can share a beer together.

Indeed sad to see you go, Brabander, but if this place isn't doing it for you, it's our loss. If people feel like they're giving without getting, eventually, they stop giving.

I've wondered if there is a way to maybe hive off the threads from visiting Europe (which I like just fine) with the (sadly) the relatively less talk about what's new and interesting hereabouts.

Sorry to see you go Thijs, I can see where you're coming from on Brussels. It's not my favorite city either, but I do what has to be done in order to have some good times on sites like this.
You've more than got your ways to trade what you like, so definately a loss for the BA's here.
I'll do my best to keep presenting our little country the way you have!

Brabander, I'm sorry my comment seems to have prompted your decision. I would hope you'll reconsider and stay with us. Accepting that others may enjoy Brussels and that it does have a number of attractions for beer enthusiasts and continuing here with your excellent advice and freely given assistance doesn't need to be a one or the other situation. The vast majority of your posts here don't involve Brussels at all. I hope that will ultimately be more important to you.

You're right when it comes to Brussels. Not a bad city but perhaps a tad overrated, to the point where it starts to overshadow some great destinations (for beer) in Belgium and Holland. Cheers.

I do not agree, at all. There's no better beer destinations in either The Netherlands or Belgium than Brussels. Not one.

As a city, Brussels is indeed the best beer destination !
Ad a region I would say the Westhoek (western part of West Flanders) is. There's the Bernardus, Struise, Dolle and Westvleteren breweries, and some great restaurants in Watou.
I guess it all depends what beer you like, or if you like cities or the countyside...
All in all, I'm glad to have that much great beer related destinations in our small country...

Opinions are like asses...everyones got one. I for one love Brussels and all that it has to offer in terms of beer experience. i agree with BenBreeg about Westoek...nice countryside and they have some amazing breweries. All in all if you want Brussels to overshadow any othr destinations thats your own choice but it really does a disservice to the city to say that the city sucks and it is such a bad place to go to. I admit that Brussels IMO doesnt offer as much as many destinations inEurope in terms of overall experience but Ill be damned if any other city in Europe tops Brussels when it comes to a great beer experience. The other cit that may even comes close is Prague

This is a major loss for this commnity, Thijs has helped many BA's in the pursuit of elusive European brews. It's like everything else, we all have opinions and should respect each others. Healthy debate is fine but what good does it do to take it much further.

Fortunately I get to see Thijs regularly and will still enjoy his wit and company. Cheers my friend!

Brussels or not, I agree this is sad for the community as a whole.

While I love the capitol, there are any number of other great places to see in Belgium. Of late, my wife and I are hooked on Poperinge (try restaurant Pegasus if you can manage it!), so please keep an open mind as to what's there...it's only a short drive (10 minutes?) to both Oostvleteren (Struise) and Westvleteren (duh) along with some beautiful countryside.

Thijs has helped countless BAs (myself included) with valuable tips, pointers and information on how to get around, where to go and what to do in Belgium and the Netherlands to say *nothing* of how many people he's helped get their hands on Westvleteren bottles.

Whatever you decide Thijs, thanks from all of us!

If Thijs wants to quit, let him quit.
I don't agree with him on Brussels and Cantillon, but he's a nice guy, let him do whatever he thinks is the right thing to do.

    Cheers y'all!!

To bad to see him go ...never saw the guy but liked his postes ...he was trying to show the world there is more than Brussels and more breweries than most beerlovers know on his own way ... but i still have to say he is from the country of flushing water (Heineken...) :stuck_out_tongue::stuck_out_tongue::stuck_out_tongue::stuck_out_tongue::rolling_eyes::rolling_eyes::rolling_eyes::rolling_eyes:

Maybe we meet someday at Westvleteren

Don't get me wrong - Brussels of course is the best beer destination in Europe! The only thing that I'm trying to say is that it is not the only destination, while here on BA, pretty much all Benelux-content concerns Brussels, and that's not something I like to see.

    Thijs-

I still have not forgotten when you helped me out with Westvleteren two years ago. To this day I still use the bottle opener that you included. Still have two bottles of XII left in the cellar! Whatever your reasons are for leaving, our community will be poorer for it. Grote dorst!
