Are there any beer hunting must stops in that area? I'd also like to stop at a big box store while I'm there, but google maps and the 9 listed here aren't giving me confidence I'd like. I found a couple of wine shops in Morristown that also sell beer, but I'm not excited about the selection. Any help from a native would be greatly appreciated. TY

Gary's in Madison or Buy Rite in Chatham would be the 2 best choices.

You could stop at Magnify Brewing while in Morristown - it's right around that area. In NYC go to Westside Market on 3rd ave.

Gary's Wine in Madison and Super Buy-Rite in jersey city both get Carton cans, both have pretty great, varied selections otherwise too. But since NYC has like some of the best bottle shops in the country, I'd do most of my beer shopping there. NYC gets pretty much everything NJ gets and a lot lot more. Go to a Whole Foods in NYC or a place like milk and honey or top hops.

When you say big box store do you mean for booze? If so total wine is your bet, I don't love beer shopping there but they get great prices for spirits and so forth. River Edge or Orange are the spots closest to the route I'm guessing you'll take.

second Gary's. The Buy Rite in chatham was recent rebranded to another name, and while they have a huge selection just check dates... he seems to buy far more than he can sell... you'll likely still see seasonal stuff from prior seasons, etc., but he will also have newest releases of stuff too.

Madison Wine Cellars just down the road from Gary's also has a big beer selection, but also not sure about turnover...

Agree with @Nickwierda about NYC being better, but if you're just staying in NJ, I'd also recommend a trip out to Boonton Liquor Outlet, which is about 15-20 minutes from Morristown. They have a really great selection there - lots of bottles that you don't see in most NJ liquor stores.

Wegmans in Parsippany and Whole Foods in Paramus are big box and have above average selections. Whole Foods does particularly well with rotating stock and having fresher beer.

But like everyone said, the Whole Foods in NYC are going to have a better local selection is...Grimm, Greenpoint.

With BigBox I just mean a store that has tons on inventory; a mountain of Captain Morgan's, or Fireball, or whatever. Like a Binnys, Specs, or Liquor Barn. I'm looking for smokebeers that I've never seen before, and I'm less concerned about rare stuff. And I will check out the bourbon aisle while I'm there, but don't often get much.

I look for smoked beers as well, and can't think of many that you might find. Your best bet will be to go on Beermenus and search for Forgotten Boardwalk Morro Castle smoked porter, and coordinate the results with your route.

Btw, the recent Bolero Snort smoked coffee maple brown ale is essentially a coffee beer, and might not be what you're looking for.

Wine & Beverage Depot (right off Rte. 46) in Totowa is a bit smaller, but has an alright selection as well. They also sell some singles, though I can't attest to the age of those bottles.
