My roommate and I live together and have no real cellar area. It also gets hot often when we are not home and running the air all day and throwing away money isnt a realistic option. Sometimes it gets to be 80 degrees in the house.. often around 76 until we turn the air on.

I have a Stone Enjoy After, 3 Floyds Wigsplitter, and Bells Neptune sitting at room temp right now, which seems to be varying more lately.

Would there be any drawbacks to storing these beers in a cooler of water to help keep the temperature down since it gets kind of hot in the house? Its just a few bottles so a cooler would be plenty of room. I'd probably weight them down somehow so that they arent just floating around.

Why not just store them in the refrigerator?

Stone Enjoy after cant be cold, since the yeast is still in the bottle and Fermenting, if you stick it in the fridge it will stop the fermenting. im sure if you stuck them in a cooler and kept the cooler closer to room temperature it would be alright, but i havent ever tried.

Not technically fermenting (well maybe a tiny, tiny bit)...conditioning? Yes. If it were still fermenting, the result could potentially be bottle bombs.

as a previous poster said....assuming your fridge is maxed out here....that being said:

Storing cans in cool running water (usually anchored to something) is an old mountain/hiking trick we've done for years....often a mountain stream will be in the 40s - perfect for keeping beer cold.

If you are storing cans in stagnant water at home - make sure to add some salt to the water to ward off any infection/mold/bacteria that can grow in the stagnant water.

I would say invest in a small refrigerator that you can control the temp. This bobbing for beers contraption sounds a little risky to me.

I know some people buy old fridges and set them at a higher temp 55-60 degrees in order to alleviate this issue. you could maybe accomplish this with a smaller dorm style fridge or something.

Alternitavely you could bury them deep in the ground maybe in a wooden box, that should work?

I have my mini fridge at its warmest and it still seems to get a little cold. Maybe I should gauge the exact temperature in it, but when my IPAs are getting cold enough for me, then I feel it is too cold for storing my stouts.

I don't know... now that I start to think about it you could do like an aquarium... put some fish in with your bobbing beers. I think you could make some money selling on etsy or something if you make it look crafty.

Haha for sure! This could be all the rage in Arizona/California/Nevada.

Dunno, stagnant water is nothing to ignore, as it can be a host for disease and crap

That is the quandry I have faced as well... I have a beer fridge, but I do like my IPAs colder than my stouts. So you just need two fridges it seems at different temps. Maybe more, a fridge per style? This all sounds doable and a worthy project. Post pics when you are done.

I just take my stouts out and leave on the counter for a bit to warm up a touch before I pour

You mean like putting your treasured rare bottles in a sturdy chest, locking it with a key, sinking it in the sea with an anchor tied to it, and keeping the chart with it's position tatooed on your scalp/back/belly?

Might be a little hassle, but turning the sea into yer cellar would present no space issues. Yarghh...

    God forbid

I'm a bit hungover today but this thread seems a bit like taking a simple problem and fixing it in the most complicated way possible

    I am inclined to agree

@op the enjoy after yeast will just slow down in the fridge, they won't die so it will be fine. Just put it in the fridge until the weather cools off then take them back out.

Why not just toss in the cooler with a block of ice? Replace the block as needed. If you have enough room in your freezer, freeze up some plastic bottles and just swap 'em back & forth as needed.

Focus more on the other issues surrounding not being able to keep beer cold?
