Wondering what yall use to store your bulk grains in? Looking for something that is somewhat stackable, sealable, keeps critters out, etc. LHBS uses plastic buckets, but they also go through grains much faster than I would. Thanks for the help.

glad this came up because i was just looking into these and was going to order the 60# with the thought of holding a ~55# sack. But 40# will work? (sorry that I'm making you answer this redundant question that was pretty clearly answered in your first post, but just want to be sure)

I am assuming that he probably leaves the grains in the bags until he opens them and uses a good 10-15# first. The sale prices are really good on these right now, but still a little beyond what I am hoping to spend (dropping $50 on 2 of these, plus $50/each on malts, plus $100+ for a mill is a lot of dough). What do you use now @telejunkie?

Thoughts on Gamma lids for 5 gallon buckets? I can get 5 gallon food-grade buckets for free all the time.

in my last house, I had a storage closet that was sealed tight and could just store them on the ground....and was always cool & dry (even survived hurricane Irene). Anyway, I've moved to a new house and i've been using just oversized rubbermaid bins in my basement which has been okay since i haven't been brewing much at all since I moved (lots of updates & repairs on the house). Anyway, since August I've started brewing a little more heavily again and I've gone from two base grain bags to five. Need better storage...agree those prices are good, but need a bunch.
What about just your basic home depot bucket with a lid?

I've got access to those for free (local grocer gives away the empty icing 5 gallon buckets when they are done) with normal lids. Was thinking of getting the Gamma lids to throw on there for more "air tight"ness. They should stack fairly easily, but I would need to have like 3 of them to hold one bag of grain.

I started using these recently. I think they are great! Easy to get in and out and easy to stack. I leave everything in the grain bag and pour the rest in the buckets I picked up from Home Depot with Gamma lids. I can fit a 50 pound bag in 2 5 gallon buckets.

If u only mill as needed, I'd just keep the whole grain in the original sack.

One dead mouse in the garage this summer. Trap killed another in the house a week ago. Smell something dead in the garage right now (need to find that). Need something a little more difficult to get into than the bags. Plus the buckets/Vittles Vault stack easier.

I use 65 qt Sterilite totes. We just had them lying around, but it looks like they're pretty cheap at Wally World. They aren't airtight but I've never had any critters show up. That said, I live in Denver, which is a relatively dry climate.

I stack them 2 high when they're full. Here's a pic of 3, but 2 of them are getting low. They store a 55 lb sack of grain perfectly.

I hadn't thought of that, but you're right. That's exactly what I do. Not sure if it will hold a full bag.

Pet food storage works for me and for quite few homebrew store, 50 Lb Heavy Duty Airtight make sure to keep it in dry dark spot.

I put my double bagged grain in a steel trash can to exclude mice... it has worked the last 12 years, and grain easily keeps for a year - however, my storage is in a basement that is around 60F year round (maybe a little cooler in the shoulder seasons when the boiler is off). I'd worry about temperature fluctuations in a garage.

I use Home Depot 5 gallon Homer buckets with Gamma lids. I have 6 total. 2 will hold 50 lbs of grain, but not quite 55 lbs. However, after opening a 55 lb sack for a batch, the rest will generally fit into two buckets. I basically have 4 for base grain (usually 2 kinds of pale barley malt or one barley and one wheat), 1 for crystal malt, and 1 for other specialty malt.

For bulk sacks of base grain, I use an airtight container made with these:
Rubbermaid Roughneck 45 gal. Black Wheeled Trash Can $25.00
    Armacell 2 in. x 30 ft. R-1 Foam Insulation Tape $8.00

Line the underside channel of the lid with the insulation tape. It seals nice and snug. It will hold 3-4 sacks of grain. I keep the grain in their original sacks. Simply twist the top of the sack to squeeze out any air and tie it with the leftover string from the sack top. For all of the numerous small bags of specialty grains in ziplock bags, I use the rolling pet food airtight storage containers. All stored in the basement.

    Why...because 'everyone' brews a minimum batch-size of 5Gs?
