I've been experimenting with small batches, and in the interests of economizing on space I considered putting the small glass carboys in a well-ventilated opaque storage container. Aside from helping them to remain cool and dark, I figured it would also help to keep them organized and out of the way. My only concern is that the fermenting beer might absorb some of the faint plasticky smell from the container. Is this possible, considering that blowoff tubes and airlocks are designed for gases to escape, not for odors or contaminants to enter? Any other reason to be concerned about this idea? As always, thanks for any and all feedback.

With an airlock/blowoff tube in place, no scents should be absorbed. Unless the beer is in direct contact with the container you are talking about there should be no issues that I can think of.

That's what I figured. But, since I'm new to home brewing, I thought I should probably ask. Thanks for the input.

Yeah the airlock is in place to hold pretty much everything out. Ask away we are all here to help out!
