Has anyone ever purchased a 1/2 barrel of a stout for their kegerator at home? I'm thinking of buying a 1/2 barrel but was wondering how long it will keep. Because it's a stout should I assume it will be fine to drink for a super long time? Because it's mostly me drinkng it this thing is going to take forever to finish, which I'm fine with as long as it doesn't go bad (I'm talking maybe having it tapped for a year?). the main reason I'm thinking of buying it is that I can get a really good deal on a stout that isn't normally available in barrels to home draft customers and it's only available in 1/2 barrel right now. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated

It'll be just fine. But out of curiosity, why not just purchase a 1/6 barrel or a 1/4 barrel instead?

As far as I understand stouts do have a longer shelf life but also a higher % stout will last even longer. Some stouts are agdd for years to get their best flavor. I however don't brew beer and just know how to pour it, your question may be better off in the Brewers section.

    depends.
typical beer of 4%-6% abv will last for quite a while if it is kept cold. 2 or 3 months without any ill effects. after that expect the hops to fade. not a problem with stout though. 6 months to a year and yeah, don't expect it to be a top notch beer. most people get tired of drinking the same beer for so long anyway, so be sure you really want this one.

8% plus, shelf life extends dramatically. if this is a big beer you can enjoy it for a year. 10%, 11% and up and then it will essentially not go bad. it will change and mostly for the better in many peoples opinion.

whatever you do, make sure it is kept cold. like all food, the colder the better. 38F is your target.
    Cheers.

    edit
if it is imported it is almost certainly pasteurized, and then you can get an extra month or two. but pasteurized keg beer kind of misses the point imo.

Nothing like mowing the lawn and coming in for a refreshing...stout. I'd say unless they are giving you the deal of the century and you don't feel bad about dumping a lot of this, then you aren't really going to be ahead. You will most certainly be bored.

I had a keg of Dragons Milk for 4 months on tap. At 11% you can only have 4-5 at a time before your toast... So lasted me a good while. Not to mention so many good bottle releases came out Oct-JAN. So it took me a while to kill it.

I had a sixtel of Smutty Baltic Porter on last year - one of my top favorite beers. Towards the end, it was work finishing it.

I had a 1/2 barrel of Troegs Mad Elf.....that is a lot of beer, and I had my wife to help...plus gave away a lot......stick to a sixtel...but if you can only get 1/2, and you really want it....do it.....at least once.....
