In my experience stouts/porters are hard to come by in UK pubs. Britain is the home of porter and I find it strange that most Real Ale pubs I frequent rarely, if ever, have a stout on the go (Guinness does not count!). This bloody well shouldn't be the case. I propose a Stout in September campaign.

Local ale house has fourteen sticks on the bar and the darkest beers are Hobgoblin and Sneckliftet. I miss Jarrow Brewery's McConnell's stout.

I'm quite lucky where I live I can think of about 4 or 5 places in walking distance that will almost always have a cask stout or porter on, but a stout September would be good! It's always a little disappointing to go in somewhere that only has pales or bitters on.

I have more luck finding milds round my way. I'll have to get chatting to landlords and see what their take on it is, but it seems there obviously isn't enough demand for it, like with mild. More the domain of craft type bars.

I'd love to open a pub that only served porter/stout!

Thankfully no one looks back through my old posts or they'd soon come to realise I'm an old crank....

....but I really miss being able to walk into a pub and drink old ales and barely wines. Yeah I know it didn't happen regularly but the odd drop of Butterknowle Old Ebeneezer always put a smile on my face.

I agree with all of this. As much as I like pale'n'hoppy, they have ruled the roost for too long. there have been a few flavoured porters doing the rounds here for while the likes of Fallen Chew-chew and a coconut one from tryst popping up. But being guaranteed one is rare

Since yesterday I've been obsessed with the idea of a pub dedicated to stout, right from the beer selection to the food menu and signage. Five pumpheads with a range of flavours and strengths and a couple of extra pumps for the odd bitter or two. Bottles of impy stout in the fridge and some on cask. Maybe a mini museum/shrine to the history of porter.
