Maybe start with milk stouts and oatmeal stouts.

Left Hand Milk Stout and Founders Imperial were the stouts that got me into stouts.

I find that most oatmeal and milk stouts are pretty bland, not necessarily sweet. Imperials and Russian Imperials tend to be sweeter if they haven't been barreled or had peppers added.

    Recommedations:
Evil Twin Biscotti Breakfast is pretty sweet.
FFF Dark Lord is as sweet as it gets but $$$ and difficult to find/trade for.
Reasonably easy to get: Founders Breakfast Stout, TenFidy, and Stone Russian Imperial.

I respect your opinion, but that and Ten Fidy are the two most overrated stouts in my book. Just my opinion. I'd take an Expedition Stout any day of the week over Speedway....twice on Sunday.

I would LOVE to get my hands on a few bottles, here in california. I can never seem to find it. I don't think they even distribute here.

Stone Imperial Russian as it's readily available. For hard to finds: BCBS, BCBCS, KBS, Parabola, Avery Uncle Jacobs

I beg to differ, but I agree to disagree. I'm from the West Coast and you're from the Midwest, and of course, everyone has their preference. I would have said Speedway - Vietnamese Coffee (just released), but wanted to mention something readily available. For me, Speedway Stout is a better quality than Expedition Stout. I don't know much, so I may be wrong.

    Do a survey.

I'm from the East Coast, so my opinions do not ally with my region at all, unlike yours. I was simply stating my opinion, so there is no right/wrong. Speedway was too sweet for me whereas Expedition was nicely balanced, but again, my opinion.

You could probably find someone willing to trade 4-6 bottles of Breakfast Stout for a few bombers of good California IPAs.
