    Hey Everyone,

Just had a realization today when a friend asked if I knew of any good Stouts or Porters to try and look out for, and I couldn't think of any. I haven't really been drinking much else outside of IPA's for a solid 6 months. So, if you could, throw me a few good suggestions on browns, porters, stouts and black ales.

    Thanks!

Some that shouldn't too hard to find-

Porters with great balance of flavors:
    Anchor Porter
    Yards Tavern Porter
    Fuller's London Porter

    More robust:
    Founders Porter
    Smuttynose Robust Porter

    Easy drinking stouts:
    Anderson Valley Barney Flats
    Sierra Nevada Stout

    Higher gravity stouts/porters:
    Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout
    Victory Storm King
    Flying Dog Gonzo Imperial Porter

I would like to put Meantime London Porter and Edmund Fitzgerald Porter from Great Lakes on the list.

I would second Fuller's London Porter as well.

I like porters that aren't just stouts. I know there's no real difference between the styles. Ones with a good bit of vanilla flavors that aren't incredibly roasted are a good change of pace.

Some great recommendations have been posted, but here are a couple more that I think you'd enjoy:

    Peche Mortel
    Cadillac Mountain Stout
    Samuel Smith's Imperial Stout

Great list! I would also include Samuel Smith's Taddy Porter and Oatmeal Stout for "balanced porters" and "easy drinking stouts," respectively. Tread lightly with imperials, if your friend is new to stouts/porters--don't want to scare him off

Second, third and fouth everything above. The only one I would add (that I think you'll be able to find in Virginia) is New Holland Dragons Milk Stout.

Do they use the same yeasts consistently with this one? It seems to taste really different every time I have it.
