Go get a 4 pack of Guinness cans and start there. Then go to left hand milk stout.

It also took me a while to get into stouts. I was more into Ipas and blond beers. But now I can't get enough of stouts and imperial stouts.

Don't force yourself. You are only 21. As we age and evolve, so do our preferences and palates. Enjoy the ride.

I hated stouts when I first tried them. Now they are my favorite style of beer. By far. I love them. Tastes evolve. Don't force it. Look for well rated stouts and appreciate them for what they are. I think, in time, you'll come to love them.

I like music. I don't like techno. I am not trying to like techno. I just like what I like and I don't try to like styles I don't like for the sake of liking them.

A few thoughts, some of which have already been said:

    1) Give it time, and try different kinds of stouts. This has worked for me; I wasn't a big fan of stouts, and have only recently started to get into them.

    2) It's possible you just don't like stouts, and that's OK, too.

    3) Don't, don't, DON'T drink a stout after a solid IPA (especially a DIPA). Make it a separate event, or drink a stout earlier, and the IPA later. You won't be doing yourself any favors crushing your palate with a boatload of hops, and then trying to enjoy a maltier beer (like a Belgian or a stout).

    Cheers!

Time, will allow your palate space to adjust to the stronger flavors of a stout. I was as you are... didn't really dig on stouts at all when I first started in with craft beer. Not that I am an over the top fan now...but I do enjoy the good stuff from time to time. Surly Darkness, Founders breakfast stout, Morning Wood are all top shelf choices of the style. And after a while, if you still don't like them. No worries. There is so much out there now to drink, you're not limiting yourself much!

My brother was the same way.....IPAs is all he really liked. I told him to give it time. It only took him a few months, but it may take you longer. Maybe try drinking Red Ales and Brown Ales for a while, or even some of the Winter beers that are steadily flooding the stores right now? Cheers man!

I just picked up another Abita Turbodog, I'm not sure why seasonal changes make the difference for me but I can't be alone on this one. I simply enjoy stouts and porters mostly in the winter months, it's kind of like my hot cocoa on cold mornings. During the summer months I'd rather drink lighter beers with that crisp hops taste, they just seem more hydrating and refreshing in the heat.

The best part about the craft beer movement is that there are ALWAYS news things available. You can stick to IPAs for a while without repeating any. As has been said on this thread (excuse the terrible rhyme) learning to appreciate malt-forward beers take time.

There's nothing wrong with disliking a certain style. Everyone has a different palate, which typically changes over time. Maybe give stouts a try in a few months, and see if your tastes have changed at all.

I wouldn't give up on them entirely, but you shouldn't feel like you need to like them.

Glassware and temp? Ten Fidy shouldn't be tasted cold. Look at the BA recommendations for style and temp.
Let your beer warm up if stored in the fridge.

I generally store my higher ABV beers outside the fridge and only put them in the fridge before I drink them.

Glassware- super important. BA suggests a snifter or pint glass. I use stemware- a tulip glass, a brandy snifter is a good glass to own: glassware makes a major difference.

Another option. If you have room in your freezer, put the beer in the freezer for a short time- 25 minutes to 50 minutes depending on your freezer and the size of the beer. This will cool it down to serving temp. You can also put it in the fridge from the freezer to keep it cool. This works for me.

Also- if you don't like a style- that's fine. I have friends who don't like hoppy beers and like IS, other friends who like hoppy beers and don't like IS. Taste is individual.

Why do we see threads like this periodically?

"Help me! I just can't get into (insert beer style.)"

Why do you think you have to like every beer style out there? There's what---about 100, give or take? Do you honestly expect to like all of them?

Does that same statement make sense in any other food or drink category? "Help me! I just can't get into rutabagas!" "Need some advice on good licorice to like!" "I love lemonade but just don't dig tomato juice---what's wrong?"

Drink what you like, sample a stout every now and then to see if your tastes have changed and don't agonize over what you're supposed to drink.

My first stout I tried I hated too. But I also thought DIPAs were too bitter. I worked my way up from APAs and started trying some more mild IPA's and slowly I wants more. More hops and more bitter.

Then I tried Left Hand Nitro Milk Stout. It was so smooth and delicious. Then I started wanting more and more.

Now I love enamel- reducing DIPAs, dark roasted Imperial Stouts, and mouth puckering sours all the same.
